Lightsaber techniques are part of elegant, ancient forms of Jedi combat. But a new move that stands with the most powerful of saber strikes has been officially introduced into Star Wars canon, and it comes from an unlikely source: nine-year-old Brendon Lake.

In 2011, Brendon won Hasbro’s “Join the Jedi” contest, which offered fans the chance to make and film their own lightsaber move, with the winning entry to be included in an episode of The Clone Wars, as well as a trip to Celebration VI for its creator.

“My dad told me about [the contest],” says Brendon, “and I knew for sure that I wanted to do it. So I started practicing and practicing, and finally I came up with the move.” Dubbed “The Whirlwind of Destiny,” Brendon’s saber technique is a fast, flashy strike, featuring spins and twirls — and it looks 100 percent Star Wars. In addition to the impressive look of the move, it also sounds epic and powerful. “Because I was doing a whole bunch of spins,” Brendon explains, “I [wanted] one word, like ‘whirlwind’ or ‘tornado.’ And I picked whirlwind.” Brendon decided to add “of Destiny” to the title, giving it even more of a Star Wars-vibe.

But that’s not all — Brendon also won a trip to Celebration VI. “It was awesome,” says Brendon. “It was an amazing experience. I met Dave Filoni, Dee Bradley Baker, Ashley Eckstein, Mark Hamill, Ian McDiarmid, Carrie Fisher, and Anthony Daniels.” Introduced to Star Wars by his dad, who showed him the movies at a young age, Brendon has now contributed to the Star Wars mythos in a way that most fans could only dream of. He has “joined the Jedi,” indeed.

Check out Brendon’s contest entry below, and watch The Clone Wars tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. on Cartoon Network to see “The Whirlwind of Destiny” make its debut.

There’s nothing about that move that we haven’t already seen on TCW already.

Really? You find the need to take something away from a 9 year old boy? Get a grip and get a life. He obviously worked hard and was super excited. I feel sorry for you.

      • avatar Admiraljoshhar says:

Well said! That move is quite impressive for anyone, ESPECIALLY a kid that young!

      • avatar RogerRogertheSithAssassin says:

I’m just saying we’ve seen moves like this before. Ima-Gun Di would be the best example. He pulled this move off in Supply Lines in almost exactly the same way.

You are probably a grandma’s basement dwelling, always judging, never did anything your self, Hide behind a screen, hate spouting, waste of good air. Go back under your rock. Great job Kid!

  2. avatar Christopher Lake says:

    Awesome moves!!! That’s my boy!!!

    • avatar Ruth Lake says:

We are huge Star Wars fans! Brendon has been watching the movies since he was old enough to walk. One of his first toys was a light saber. Thanks everyone for all your supportive comments! He was so humbled when he won he shared his prizes with his friends and neighbors.

Congratulations Brendon ! All the best from Belgium !

  4. avatar Mike Huisman says:

Nice move, it’s pretty flashy. Which light saber form would it fit into?

  5. avatar Lance says:

Congrats young Jedi! The fact that you got to meet all those people from the Star Wars universe is just.. well, I’m jealous. :)

  6. avatar Kayleigh says:

I thought it was pretty awesome for a 9 year old! :3

    Keep up the good work!

  7. avatar Toddius Maximus says:

Well done, Brendon. Don’t sweat “Roger Roger the Sith Assassin”. While you may not completely understand when I say that someone with the nickname “Roger Roger the Sith Assassin” has issues with his self-esteem, lives in his parent’s basement, works somewhere where he has to ask “Do you want fries with that?” even though he’s probably 30, and has never had a girlfriend, you will understand when I say that he’s jealous that he’s not as cool as you.

  8. avatar deneric says:

That kid could kick my ass

  9. avatar Boasius says:

Great job on the moves! I think it would totally fit into some lightsaber technique form like Form IV. The Ataru. ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Form_IV:_Ataru )
It’s much like yoda’s moves. Cheers from Europe!

  10. avatar Mix says:

Nice moves, looked awesome in the latest episode :) .

Hmm, so a random person posts something negative about the video and people feel the need to pull the “He’s lives in a basement with no life” statement, when the better way would be to just ignore him. Honestly, you guys know better.

I guess if I ever have a negative nancy moment I *obviously* live in a basement with no life….

Ah, if only I had a basement.

  11. avatar Max Nocerino says:

Fantastic choreography!!! When I was 9, i could barely hold a bat, much less that!!!! Great job Brendon, you’ve definetely earned your place in the Star Wars mythos. From a nerd’s opinion, this move strikes me as deriving from Juyo, from the large amount of kinetic energy you have generated.

  12. avatar Cibernite says:

Nice moves. You got to do something that’s truly amazing.

  13. avatar Grant says:

In all honesty, This kid is better coordinated than Hayden was in episode II. They should put him in the new ones as one of Luke’s students.

  14. avatar Brendon Lake says:

    Thanks for all your support!
I’m glad so many other people like Star Wars other than me!
    I LOVE STAR WARS!!!!

  15. I loved this! Good for you, Brendon!

  16. avatar Mike Geib says:

I saw the “Whirlwind of Destiny” this week, and I’m wondering if/when any other Join the Jedi contest winners’ moves will be making it onscreen? (My son won the Canadian edition of Join the Jedi with the “Saddle Slash”).

  17. avatar Ruth Lake says:

    Mike,
I hope it gets aired! We will look out for it! Tell your son congratulation from Texas!

    • avatar Mike Geib says:

Me too. I hadn’t heard any spoilers about season 5, but as soon as the whole Younglings storyline began, I started keeping my eyes peeled.

Congratulations again to Brendon! The Whirlwind of Destiny was awesome.

  18. avatar Jonny M says:

Well done that boy! Most people couldn’t do this at any age.

  19. avatar Kweh-chan says:

HUGE congratulations Jedi Master Brendon! You should be very proud of yourself! May the Force be with you, always!

    Greetings from England :)

  20. avatar Tj says:

I have a feeling that the some of the jedi younglings will not survive. I think that Ganodi and Zatt will survive. Ganodi and Zatt have a good friendship. Zatt and Ganodi are sweet in the show. Ganodi and Zatt might kiss at the end of season five.

  21. avatar Tj says:

Dave i have a question. Will Ganodi and Zatt kiss at the end of season five. from Tj

  22. avatar Tj says:

Man keeping your eyes open give a break.

  23. Love star wars your right no kid could do that at any age. May the force be with you.

  24. Hey guys iv been reading a lot of comments and so far a lot have been saying they like gunji. What really upsets me is one fan says that Ganodi is a biggest crybaby and is a brat. Also the same fan says she is still the biggest crybaby and says she follows along with Zatt. It really pisses me off. But what really makes me lagh is they say Katooni is hot. Ganodi
