The Long, Winding, and Shapeshifting Trail to Episodes VII, VIII & IX

J.W. Rinzler | October 30, 2012

The long conjectured third Star Wars trilogy has kept fans guessing for decades, and may even have a few numerologists working on their mysteries. George Lucas’ shifting feelings about future Star Wars trilogies have consistently clouded the picture. Given the difficulties associated with the birth of Star Wars in 1977, it’s no wonder that Lucas’s ideas kaleidoscoped. When trying to get such a big undertaking up and running and out the door, visions of the future are understandably hazy. But, as of October 30, 2012, Episodes VII, VIII and IX have been announced as real and soon to be tangible — but they’ve existed as gossamer spirits for nearly 40 years.

On December 29, 1975, in conversation with Alan Dean Foster per the novelization of Star Wars, Lucas mentioned the prequel trilogy along with what would become Episodes V and VI: “I want to have Luke kiss the Princess in the second book. In the third book, I want the story just about the soap opera of the Skywalker family, which ends with the destruction of the Empire. Then someday I want to do the back story of Kenobi as a young man – a story of the Jedi and how the Emperor eventually takes over and turns the whole thing from a Republic into an Empire, and tricks all the Jedi and kills them. The whole battle where Luke’s father gets killed. That would be impossible to do, but it’s great to dream about.”

As Lucas came to terms with Twentieth Century-Fox during the making of Star Wars, he secured the legal rights to his sequels, though they remained undefined at the time. On location for the first phase of principal photography in Tunisia in March 1976, Lucas began a long tradition of talking with close collaborators, voicing his ideas for these other episodes and trilogies, much as Walt Disney would do of his projects.

“You know, when I first did this, it was four trilogies,” Mark Hamill recalled in 2004, speaking of their conversation in 1976. “Twelve movies! Out on the desert, any time between setups… lots of free time. And George was talking about this whole thing… ‘Um, how’d you like to be in Episode IX?’ ‘When is that going to be?’ ‘2011.’ […] I said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do?’ He said, ‘You’ll just be like a cameo. You’ll be like Obi-Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope.’”

In 1978, a Time magazine article reported that the Star Wars Corporation (a subsidiary Lucas had formed for Star Wars) would be producing “Star Wars II [Empire], and then, count them, 10 other planned sequels.” At that time Lucas consistently mentioned 12 films and even created a barebones outline to that effect.

jwr_img02

In it, the original trilogy occupied Episodes VI, VII, and VIII; a Clone Wars trilogy took up Episodes II, III, and IV, while Episode I was a “prelude,” Episodes IX through XI were simply left blank – and Episode XII was the “conclusion.”

In 1979, however, Lucas said in an interview on the set of Empire, “The first script was one of six original stories I had written in the form of two trilogies. After the success of Star Wars, I added another trilogy. So now there are nine stories. The original two trilogies were conceived of as six films of which the first film was number four.”

While in postproduction in early 1980, Lucas used to kick back from time to time with ILM manager Jim Bloom and muse about the bigger story. “The first trilogy is about the young Ben Kenobi and the early life of Luke’s father when Luke is a little boy,” Lucas said. “This trilogy takes place some 20 years before the second trilogy, which includes Star Wars and Empire. About a year or two passes between each story of the trilogy and about 20 years between the trilogies. The entire saga spans about 55 years. I’m still left with three trilogies of nine films. At two hours each, that’s about eighteen hours of film!”

While Empire was originally part of a 12-film plan, by the time it was released, the number had clearly been reduced to nine. “The prequel stories exist — where Darth Vader came from, the whole story about Darth and Ben Kenobi — and it all takes place before Luke was born,” Lucas explained at the time. “The other one — what happens to Luke afterward — is much more ethereal. I have a tiny notebook full of notes on that. If I’m really ambitious, I could proceed to figure out what would have happened to Luke.”

Lucas mentioned these notebooks — or one big book — to me, a few years ago. I asked if I could see it, but he declined. My feeling is that this big book or these notebooks are private, though Lucas has occasionally sent me via an assistant miscellaneous handwritten notes from the period 1976-1983 to help in the writing of the making-of books.

But two years later while filming Jedi, for many reasons, Lucas was burning out, tired of the whole enterprise: “I’m only doing this because I started it and now I have to finish it,” he adds. “The next trilogy will be all someone else’s vision.”

As of today, Lucas has given his new co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy several ideas and is really going into semi-retirement. Now, in a relatively short time, compared to the decades of speculation, fans will learn the secrets of Episodes VII, VIII and IX. Star Wars has risen again!

Lucasfilm executive editor J. W. Rinzler is the author of The Making of Star Wars and The Complete Making of Indiana Jones. He is now writing The Making of Return of the Jedi (and really looking forward to finishing it) for a fall 2013 release. You can visit jwrinzler.com for more info.

    Heir. To. The. Empire.

And no, Joss Whedon would not be a good fit for Star Wars. Just think about his movies for a bit. Completely NOT compatible. That being said, if they pick Michael Bay I will literally go over there and start shooting people.

    • avatar Katarnlunney says:

The Mouse has spoken. Henceforth, Star Wars is in the hands of Disney.

This has the makings of great cinema and expanding the mythos of the SW Universe, or it will violate and crush the very fabric of what fans have waited decades to see.

I, personally, am hopeful that Eps. 7-9 will be done with the utmost care and respect to the fans who have stuck to their guns and supported the creative teams at Lucasfilm, Lucasarts and ILM.

That being said, I would beg the writers at Lucasfilm to ask past writers from the EU, Lucas and even the fans what they want to see.

Heir to the Empire is the film we’ve waited 20 years to see (with fan-favorites Grand Admiral Thrawn, Joruus C’baoth and of course Mrs. Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade). The Dark Empire Trilogy or Jedi Academy Trilogy would be good as well. Or perhaps the next generation of Jedi Knights with the Solo kids, Ben Skywalker and their friends against the armadas of the darkside!

I understand the company’s desire to go their own way and come up with an original story, but we hope that there will be respect to those of us who have devoted so much time, energy, fandom, and yes, college tuition, to read, play and live in that galaxy far, far away through every media Mr. Lucas has put out for us.

Here’s to you Lucasfilms! You’re are only hope!

    • avatar Senn says:

I agree with mblack, Bay detroys everything he touches, look at the Transformers franchise, clearly doesnt listen to the fans

    • avatar Darth Marg says:

Are you kidding? Joss Whedon would be perfect for this. He loved Han Solo so much he created an entire series with a similar character piloting his cargo ship and smuggling across the galaxy. Go watch Firefly and Serenity.

  3. avatar Gini Justice says:

As much as like the revamped genres of recent years, Star Wars doesn’t need it. Continue on with a new generation of Jedi like the EU has done. The Legacy series would fit I think, or NJO.

  4. avatar Starwars for life Jedi and sith says:

Legaxy area and see Darth Caedus this would be great . all the orginall actors can come back this way and see the magic come back. Legacy is the best book serious and would be a great way to make this into a trilogy.

    • avatar Troteus says:

as much as I’d love to see legacy made into a film, there are too many references to other novel series such as The Dark Nest series and New Jedi Order (more specifically, the Yuuzhan Vong War) that most people who have not avidly read the novels wouldnt understand. They would have to twist the story too much to make it fit.

  5. avatar Nnnn says:

No one wanted another trilogy! Why couldn’t George let the franchise die with dignity instead of selling Star Wars to Disney where they will make unnecessary films. The six films tell the entire story of star wars, it’s the rise and fall of Darth Vadr, now they only care about making bank.

    • avatar techwiz says:

Quit your whining and don’t watch it!!!

    • avatar Bribribri says:

Speak or yourself…..if no one wanted more there would not be top selling expanded universe novels……I want more!!

      • avatar Draconic says:

Let’s hope that they reboot the expanded universe a few books before the Yuuzan Vong show up.

The New Jedi Order was a disaster, creating a plot hole in terms of Anakin, Tahiri and Ikrit’s prophesy, murdering Chewbacca, and turning Coruscant into a jungle and ruining everything that was so cool about it.

And Fate of the Jedi was just copying episode three, plot point for plot point. Jacen turns to the dark side in EXACTLY the same manner that Anakin does.

Sickening lack of creativity and fan appreciation.

    • avatar Vurnun-3 says:

Is that what you think? In a sea of “Re-me’s ” star wars is one of the few origional stories that has kept some kind of consistancy. I for one would have liked to have seen Gerge lucas complete SW-VII -> IX+ but sometimes it just takes a lot of time to do a huge work. He has decided therefore to find some fairly responsible studio to continue things. Take a look at what some people have done to Star trek! It could be a lot worse. That franchise is now rendered inconsistant. I was not happy with what the current crew trying to keep roddenbury’s dream alive, did to the vulcans..

what would you feel if say a significant part of star trek was simply outed with a totaly contrived swtch to the story that eliminated a significant story element, say – Chewbacca’ , or Princess lea? Or een a whole race [the wookies get all but wiped out in a temporal incursion - etc?? ] And if you had bothered to listen to his reasons, george lucas is getting old.

So he finds help in the form of a deceint company whom is able and willing to continue the story line. Seems quite good to me [and more logical than allowing people whom would resort to stupid Re-me devices to alter the whole story context]..

    • avatar cdsjedi says:

No, the 6 films don’t tell the entire story of SW…and learn how to spell Vader!

  6. avatar Noah says:

I can’t wait until the next Star Wars Trilogy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. avatar Jeffrey Arao says:

…As long as the continuity remains. I love the Star Wars Universe how it is and how it has been, and excited to see where it goes. I would hate to see it altered or having storylines changed. I hope Disney protects all of this.

  8. avatar Lillian Skye says:

I’m curious to see what’s planned for Star Wars…but I’m trusting Disney. It seems like Star Wars and Disney have been getting along for years with the Star Tours ride and merchandise, (not to mention Star Wars Weekends!) so we’ll have to see how this goes.

  9. avatar @polos L. says:

Please, please do not use anything from EU. Please use some old ideas from George and develop them with his approval. We don’t want ideas from other authors but from Lucas himself.

    Thanks.

    Greetings from Mexico

    • avatar Hirkala says:

Who’s we? Cause I absolutely want to see EU stories on the big screen. Namely, Thrawn. Put Thrawn in the movies!

Plus, do you really think that Big George would let a SW book get published without him OKing it? If you do, you don’t know George. He had to approve each book that was added to the SW EU. So, he is ok with that story.

      • avatar Draconic says:

With Disney running the show, George is powerless now.

Also, he was easy to get an okay from. You’d think he’d have objected to killing Chewbacca or ruining Coruscant both of which he created himself, but he just let it happen.

On a side note though, Thrawn is a good idea. I’ve never read the Thrawn series, but I do know it’s one of the most acclaimed EU pieces.

        • avatar drunkenjedi says:

Actually, Lucas didn’t create Coruscant. It was Timothy Zahn who first used the name of the capital planet in his book, Heir to the Empire (the first book of the Thrawn Trilogy).

I don’t believe that LucasFilm will ignore the EU continuity. To do so would alienate the majority of their fan base and the most lucrative one, i.e. the book, comic, game, toy buying fans.

Kathleen Kennedy said that Disney has purchased an entire galaxy containing over 17,000 characters, the majority of which do not come from the 6 films but from the hundreds of novels, comics, and games.

However, if they make films that “rewrite” Star Wars history, then they may lose credibility and their Star Wars fans at the same time.

  10. avatar Jmentes82 says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing maybe a darth bane trilogy. He might not be the founder or the rule of two, but he was the first to implement it. Plus plenty of action through all three books

    • avatar Sean says:

This needs to happen stat. DISNEY IF YOU’RE READING THIS, LISTEN TO THIS MAN HERE!!!

    • avatar Rich says:

The Bane series would be awesome.

    • avatar cdsjedi says:

YES! Darth Bane is awesome. I’d love to see some Old Republic stuff – if it’s done the right way!!
They could even go further back for my money. Maybe Exar Kun, or Freedon Nadd would be super cool. …As long as were daydraeaming about what-if’s, why not go all the way back a couple thousand years before that, and start on the planet Ziost and show how the original Sith species intermingled with Humans. I’d like to see all of that.

  11. avatar thecuotoms says:

as long as they don’t put justin bieber or any ridiculous ‘disney-born’ currently so-called ‘celebrities’ in any of the movies…that should be fine, i guess.

my whole universe is constructed upon star wars…please Disney-people, do not kill the storyline. Don’t f*** this up!

  12. avatar David says:

I’d like to see old republic like darth bane because all the saga movies are focused on the Jedi I’d like to see darth banes rise through the Sith academy

    Ridley Scott

    • avatar Frank Hotdog says:

The best comment on this blog so far.

    • avatar Christopher says:

I second that. It would be great to have a different director for each of the future movies, and perhaps using them again for each trilogy thereafter. Ridley Scott would be a great choice. Perhaps Guillermo del Toro for the next one.

Please capture the look and feel of episodes IV and V.

Also, R2D2 and C3PO should be in every film.

It would be great to have Mark Hamill appear in episode VII instructing new jedi apprentices, how to use a lightsaber, etc. Carrie Fisher as an ambassador. Harrison Ford in semi-retirement as a barkeep perhaps :-)

      • avatar OMER says:

I would like to see Leia as a senator or perhaps as the President of the New Republic and Han Solo as her husband, with Luke one of the masters of the new Jedi Temple…as percieved in the novels. However…who is the new menace? And why are we regressing back to the Skywalker family? Lord Sidious and Vader are dead..where does this new menace arise? Is he Sith? an intergalactic invader? Or perhaps some one from a distant galaxy…like Earth?

Ridley Scott would be a brilliant choice to direct, including Mel Gibson or Alfonso Cuaron or perhaps James Cameron. But like the guy said, Michael Bay, Joss Whedon, or any other mediocre pop culture director would be a poor choice.

    • avatar mse says:

ridley scott would never in a million years, touch a star wars film.

      • avatar chriscubed says:

        MSE:

And you know this how? You’re his best pal?

He’s a brilliant sci-fi director. If he was given enough control maybe he would be interested.

  14. avatar Nabilito says:

I would like to be cast in a role for the next trilogy, please.

  15. It certainly is exciting.
I seem to recall reading in my Star Wars Weekly comic, around 1979 [?] – before ‘Empire’ even came out – about 18 or 20 films!

What I’d like to see is something of the original approach of ‘75:
    - A simple story
    - A small tight cast of strong, interesting, and amusing characters with well-developed back-stories
    - Active characters with minimal exposition

I think it’s achievable. It certainly works for PIXAR. Hey! Those guys are a part of… DISNEY!

    Regards,
    John White

  16. avatar Brian says:

The ONLY logical path for Episodes 7-9 would be for Luke to fall to the Dark Side… taking the road of justifying just little bits of bad to justify the greater cause. Then of course, Leia is there to try to stop him from following their father’s fate.

But of course, as with the Prequels, somebody will just screw up the story and established continuity of 4, 5, and 6. The Prequels are a mess and the Post-quels will undoubtedly be as well. All the EU crap needs to stay where it belongs and off the big-screen. If only the Disney deal came with the promise to burn the Prequels and remake them from scratch.

There’s nothing else to see here… move along…move along.

    • avatar Troteus says:

If I’m not mistaken, and I might be, but isnt that the plot of Heir to the Empire where the emperor’s clone turns luke to the dark side and leia turns him back to the light and he kills the emperor?

    • avatar Andy Hill says:

The Jedi Academy Trilogy would also be a good choice. Luke doesn’t go to the Dark Side but one of his students sure does…and It takes Han Solo, of all people, to bring him back lol

  17. avatar DarthDan says:

I’m not AT ALL a fan of the idea of a sequel to ROTJ !!! This movie was the first step towards the cinematic disaster of the prequel !!!
I really think that the best move is to start from scratch with a brand new trilogy set in “medieval” Star Wars time period that could set the table for a complete retake on Anakin and Obiwan story s’en they began at the flight Academy ! (Not the story of a children that no body cares about, but an adult, or at least a young adult, tale !!!) At first, the Jedis could be an unorganised and underground group followers, almost like the persecuted Christians during the Roman Empirer era ! The Siths and the Jedis almost at the same level of evolution in the mastering and understanding of the force ! The prequels must be retake for the sake of us all !!! The Skywalker’s deserve that ! The orginal trilogy (That is not so mouche original anymore with all the crappy special editions made…) also need to be updated

    • avatar Itsatrap89 says:

This was my first thought as well. I feel a PREprequel would be a great storyline. The Jedis forming, finding the balance in the force… With the third telling the story of Palpatine becoming Sidious and creating Anakin. It would be riveting to watch and could encompass adult roles, rather then having a new Jar Jar and Little Ani kick off a new trilogy. I was really nervous hearing about new Star Wars films, they obviously need to be some right, and disney seems really ambitious coming out of the gate. But they have Marvel and did a bang up job there, so well have to see what happens.

  18. avatar Wtftastic says:

How about some of Timothy Zahn’s work? Its a natural fit.

  19. avatar orozcomad says:

I hope this new trilogy will be the jedi apprentice books the life of obi wan it would be a better story than the ones I’ve read about star wars B.ep VI i guess wolud be better to let the people know how is that he became the bést jedi master along with qui-gon i just love the part when they get in to a battle on meeelida/daan and the secret love of qui-gon on Thal i just think it would be a better story and shows more interest about the olé republic and the jedi order just as when qui-gon disrespect them when he goes to look on Thal

  20. avatar sean says:

Who cares, I was 11 when I saw star wars, I am 46 now can’t wait to see what Disney do…
A new direction-do or do not, there is no try.

  21. avatar The Historian says:

I’m of the opinion that Star Wars should be laid to rest, or at least the series focusing on the skywalker family. Only an other time era or protagonist would make me interested. Samurai literature is still full of story models and so is Medieval and ancient history. For example, the epic byzantine poem ‘Digenes Akritas’ would be a cool narritive model if it would be used as the basis of a new star wars series.

The problem of the prequels was that it was struggling with adapting the story to its three intended audiences: 1. young adolescants and kids 2. diehard fans, most of them in their fourties 3. people who just wanted to see a movie. The young adolescants seem to have gained the upper hand as the intended audience. To bad, kids don’t review movies, the other ones do! So Disney and Lucas Film, best to structure the narrative and the familiar tropes and topoi on those diehard fourtiers! That means EMPIRE!

  22. avatar R says:

I hope they go into how Luke eventually fights the emperor again.
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Luke_Skywalker
He goes through some pretty badass stuff later in his life.

  23. avatar David W H says:

I think somewhere Luke and Leia should visit their mothers gave on Naboo. Anakin should talk with Leia and she will not except him as her father for what he did to alderran. Chewbacca goes to Kashyyyk to free the wookie slaves. The reopening of the Jedi temple. New or hidden Jedi. We still don’t know if Asoka from the Clone wars lives or dies, at least i don’t. If so she would be an interesting story line. someone who could help Luke with training the new jedi. also the remnants of the old empire, moffs and governors taking over and tring to retake corusant. and yes i know my spelling sucks.

  24. avatar Peter says:

My hope for the new films is a return to what lucas did in the first three films, the look and atmosphere of the “used universe”, where everything just looks battered, as opposed to the prequel films, where everything is shiny and spotless. maybe more real sets and less CGI would be cool too. I really hope that they don’t try to focus on returning Hamill Ford and Fisher, I would like an all-new cast with a new story focusing somehow on rebuilding the republic. Maybe they will be able to portray the jedi how they were in the original film, as mysterious, solitary monks like Obi-Wan, instead of Generals leading military flanks in war.

  25. avatar DarthDan says:

I’m not AT ALL a fan of the idea of a sequel to ROTJ !!! This movie was “ok”, but was also the first step towards the “cinematic disaster” of the prequel trilogy !!! I really think that the best move for Disney is to start from scratch with a brand new trilogy set in “medival” Star Wars time period that could set the table for an eventual complete retake of Anakin and Obiwan trilogy, set at the period when they both enter the flight Academy ! (Not the story of a boring kid that nobody can related to or care about ?!?!), but an adult, or at least a young adult, tale !!!) At first, the Jedi could be an unorganised and underground group followers, almost like the persecuted Christians during the Roman Empire era ! The Sith and the Jedi almost at the same level of evolution in the mastering and understanding of the force ! The prequels must be completely remade for the sake of us all !!! The Skywalker’s legacy deserve that ! The orginal trilogy (That is not so much original anymore, with all the crappy special editions made…) also need to be updated form a “story line” perspective as well as “technicaly” speaking… A talented Star Wars geek must be in charge of these movies, like Peter Jackson did for LOTR ! Not a “cinematic surgeon” hired by Disney to do another pathetic kids flick !!! Oh ! And by the way ?! Please no more f******* sidekicks “à la Jar-Jar Binks” !!!! I was 9 years old when I first saw Star Wars A New Hope and Chewie was a threatning beast for me at that time ! And that’s what I liked ! Not a brainless muppet show type of alien ?! Never the less, I had an instant facination for the giant walking carpet ! The new films need a solid and believable back story, ritch and credible dialogues, good actors that are well directed, special effects that serve the story, etc. I never thought I would live long enough to see talented people do some more (Or brand new…) Star Wars movies !!! I hope I won’t regret not being 6 feet underground when that happen… ;) -

  26. avatar AlexRmF says:

You know… I like what I’m hearing, and this might be the best occasion to see Kyle Katarn in a Star Wars movie… for me he was one of the most memorable EU characters, the NJO should also make an interesting setting for the new trilogy and hopefully we’ll see cameos of all the actors from the first trilogy

  27. avatar are you fricking kidding me says:

Lucas years ago!!!! hired Timothy Zahn to novelize episodes 7, 8, & 9. The Thrawn trilogy. How could the movies be anything else? If the next Star Wars movies are anything else, they need to be episodes (any higher number than 9!!!)

  28. avatar sethscruggs says:

I don’t see anything wrong with making more movies and continuing the story. I want to see ore Star Wars films. I would love to see some movies based off some of the video games and books. My only hope is that they do it right and not mess anything up. That will make me happy.

  29. avatar Falco Creed says:

Ever since I first saw the original trilogy on VHS at the age of five back in ‘97, I’ve been through varying degrees of obsession with Star Wars. It’s been my one, long lasting obsession (Batman is a very close second). I was younger when the second trilogy came out, and I enjoyed them as…well, as what happened before Luke Skywalker and company. Since then, I’ve concluded that the second trilogy was a cinematic mistake and that the general plot is what counts. Now, I’ve read the comic books and novels, I’ve played the videogames, and I’ve been engulfed in the Star Wars EU, and from what I know, almost all of the novels are cannon, the videogames hold a fair degree of canonical validity, and the comics vary depending on the subject matter (the small anecdotal comics tend to fall to the wayside when pitted against a novel or full graphic novel). If there was going to be a third trilogy, it would need to come from the EU canon. There really isn’t much time and plot to play with after Return of the Jedi. Personally, I’d rather the new trilogy cover the very distant future of the EU (maybe as far as the Legacy series of comics). The only series within 20ish years of Jedi that could be used as good film material is the adventures of young Jaina and Jacen Solo, or even earlier, the Jedi Academy chronicles. The focus would need to be away from Luke, Han, and Leia. Essentially, I fear Episodes VII-IX will either be total crap or ruin the well established EU canon.

  30. avatar Mike Coulombe says:

    Kyle Katarn.

    • avatar Draconic says:

As fun as that would be…Not gonna happen. Just download the radio drama and watch playthroughs of the games without commentary.

  31. avatar Mischa says:

A lot of people don’t like the prequels, but I enjoyed them. That said, I think they should go with a storyline that focuses on the Old Republic rather than continuing the Skywalker storyline and putting the Jedi Order bqack together. If they could make a movie that was even remotely as awesome as the Knights of the Old Republic game, I think a lot of fans of the franchise would have their respect restored. I think that the main problem with the prequels was that the story seemed to be put together too hastilly and because Lucas wanted to utilize the CGI that he wasn’t able to in the original films, it didn’t have the nostalgic quality some fans were expecting. But hopefully this time around, they will pay a little more attention to character developement and how the characters fit in with the story. And please add more force powers…you guys have the CGI to do it!

  32. avatar Bruno sanz says:

The next director… CRISTOPHER NOLAN PLEASE!!!

  33. avatar Oscar says:

I think it would be more interesting to have movies about they earlier stages of the jedi. Before the movies started. The war between Jedi and Sith. Like the games that’s been made, KOTOR.

  34. avatar Wils says:

    Oh please…no Justin bieber, please.

  35. avatar rootsmusic says:

Steven Spielberg should direct Episode VII, and Ridley Scott should direct Episode VIII.

  36. avatar mommap says:

I think it’s completely stupid to think that Disney would waste screen time retelling a Star Wars tale that has already been told. I don’t want to see any of the awful EU books made into a film. What a waste of celluloid! I hope they create a new and original set of stories that continues the story of Luke, Leia, Han and the others. They should be congruent with the novels, of course, but not BASED on them. I want something new.

  37. avatar Jeff says:

Ok people Lucas wrote treatments for 7,8,9..there will not I mean not any eu stories maybe after the new trilogy is over ok..this will be about Luke. I guarntine it. no way Lucas wants the eu he never speaks of it .its his storys and that’s what kathleen kenndey will do.

  38. avatar SkyWave says:

Who knows where it will lead us?
I’m not excited of Disney’s production in new episodes. But I’m curious what where in The Galaxy Far Far Away.

So, here we are… First, I was like how did this happen? Disney and Lucasfilm…but now that I think about it… OH MY GOD!!!! WE ARE GETTING MORE STAR WARS MOVIES!!!!! (yes, I was yelling that as I typed it…) Now I am a 100% total fan of everything SW. The books, read them all, love most of them. The comics, are you kidding me? FANTASTIC! Video games, everyone is a new addiction. The role-playing games…have you played the Saga Edition? It’s amazing! And finally the movies… I love them all… all 6 (well, 7, but you know what I mean.) I don’t see the first 3 episodes as failures, I thought they were brilliant and beautiful. I love Jar Jar Binks! That’s right, I said it. I thought the pod races were enthralling and Anakin’s turn to the darkside in episode 3…wow! The only thing wrong is that Natalie Portman kind of flaked out…damn you Nats! But seriously, we are all fans and our little nerd hearts are about to explode with the pure joy of seeing another Star Wars. Where to go with it though? Kyle? Rogue Squadron? Y.V.? What about the Legacy? (That would be awesome right?) But how to stay true to what we have all read or played or enjoyed for the last few decades and not ruin what is our most beloved of things… Star Wars is my precious. It is my addiction. Nothing has brought me more joy than Star Wars. Nothing makes me feel like a kid again like Star Wars. I can’t imagine my life without knowing what Jedi are, or the Sith. So where for these movies to go? Legacy, Legacy, Legacy! I need to see the Sword of the Jedi in action!

I’d love to see Ben Skywalker in this trilogy, maybe something after the Fate of the Jedi books. it would fit, the next skywalker son taking the lead with each trilogy.

Unfortunately, Ben Skywalker gets killed while he’s still a fairly young man (Thirties or something?) by the oxymoronic Sith Order. (It’s oxymoronic because evil does not get along well with more evil, especially when there’s a lot of it. It would make more sense for Darth Krayt to just slaughter all of his comrades and take power for himself.)

What about Han and Leia’s kids? Stalked by boba fett and the new academy on yavin?

  42. [...] on Bleeding Cool, but… The original 12-part outline for the Star Wars saga can be found at The Official Star Wars Blog. Back then, the "Luke Skywalker Defeats the Empire" storyline was supposed to be told in [...]

I just care about the Clone wars. And, seriously, if it were up to me, the entirety of the movies would be redone in the Clone Wars Style, and any further movies would all be done like this.

  44. avatar Mikie says:

And now we will see that Jar Jar Binks was a Sith Lord all along, hence his being in the right place at the right time so many times.

  45. avatar Doc says:

I would love to see a prequel trilogy of Obi-wan’s story. like from when he first joined the jedi order, up until episode 1.

  46. avatar Marlec says:

I’m A BIG FAN of The whole StarWars universel. I’ve read almost every book/series ever made. Not a big fan of épisode 1( everybody knows why…). I’m also not a fan of putting New actors in existing rôles(Luke/Hamill,Solo/Ford,etc.). That said, I think The NeXT trilogy should be about The Xwing series…VII-Corran Horn’s admission in The Rebels, VIII-The war for Thyffera, IX-The fall of Coruscent… The perfect trilogy to give cameos to Hamill, Ford, Fischer & The gang… People would learn The Horn legacy…

  47. avatar Nate says:

I’m curious what will come next, and while I’m sure it won’t be perfect, and I’m not sure it’ll be “as great as episodes 4-5,” I’m sure it will be a lot of fun like almost nothing else

I enjoy the novels, and wouldn’t mind something adapted from them … or separate from, but taking those stories into account. I’m also not going to be bothered if they get left as “non-canon.”

If you take this stuff too seriously, you’ll always be disappointed. If you enjoy it for what it is… well, it doesn’t get much better. :)

More movies? Bring it on!! Love this universe and I’m ready to see the future of the whole thing. Ready to meet the twins and Ben, Mara Jade, hell bring it asap!

    Peter. Jackson. Please.

I´d also love the Thrawn trilogy, also the novel where Han marries Leia, and all the stuff of Lady Vader and the Noghri.
