Yeah, Lost Legacy's a treat too. I love how Daley gives you the "chill scene" of Han explaining that "the only real gunman within light-years is standing right in front of you." It's the scene where Hasti falls for him, but Daley immediately cuts to the arrival on-planet of Gallandro -- a superior gunman Han actually fears.

There's a lot going on there, and Daley handles it all with aplomb and wit.

[...] Star Wars Reads. Well, hopefully you have a good idea of what you’re doing tomorrow, but for today, the chat at GoodReads is on. Of particular interest may be Randy Stradley addressing continuity concerns people have been bringing up for Brian Wood’s Star Wars. Jason Fry, Ryder Windham, Jeffrey Brown and Timothy Zahn have answered fan questions so far. And on the Star Wars blog, Fry weighs in on his first Star Wars book. [...]

Jason, I had a very similar experience to yours, but it was 1980 and Han Solo's Revenge was on the spinning rack at Zayre's. :)

Daley's Solo books are still to me the pinnacle of what the EU has to offer. As a western fan, I love Gallandro from Lost Legacy and the way Han took him out.

Warning: some spoilers in my comment!

Frankly, I prefer Crispin's books because of the insight they give into Han's background (including some famous Kessel incident, for instance :D) and they're on the very top of my SW novels list. Still, the Daley's trilogy that I picked up shortly afterward (I know, this order was a mistake of mine) is not worse - it's just different. And it's also really underrated. I've heard fans claiming it's to oldschool and thus less starwarsy than modern EU positions.
Well, I can't agree with them :D Those books were a real fun to read. Same as Jason, I enjoyed Bollux and Blue Max; Brian Daley came up with a lot of unique characters like Odumin, all those girls that Han hooks up with, great Gallandro... (in contrary to Ann Crispin, who digged a lot of characters from already existing sources - well, Daley didn't have such an opportunity). And the plot itself has its memorable moments - my favourite ones being the destruction of Stars' End (Han takes the whole structure almost single-handedly - that gave me a shiver), the pursuit on Bonadan and already classic final confrontation between Han and Gallandro.
I regret that I hadn't got a chance to meet the author too. Those books of him are somewhat different from any other Star Wars novel I've ever read.

My first Star Wars novel was the original movie novelisation which I actually read again recently. Since then I have read every main line novel right up to X-Wing mercy kill which I finished last night. There are highs and lows in the EU but overall it is difficult to pick a favourite book. If pushed I would say Heir To The Empire as it was the book that really started it all. I was lucky enough to get my 20th anniversary edition signed by Tim Zahn at celebration VI. Long may the books keep coming so I can continue living in that galaxy far far away.

Great post! I just read Daley's "Han Solo Adventures" a few weeks ago and he nailed Han's character right on. When I read A. C. Crispin's "Han Solo Trilogy," there was something off about Han's characterization. It was good, but it didn't feel right. But, Daley's Solo was spot-on.

Bravo. Also my hands-down favorite Star Wars novel for so many reasons. Han's final scene with Torm is still one of the most powerful moments in any novel. To me at least. Ask Rekkon. :)

Great choice ! It's absolutely one of my favourites as well. Daley did a lot with the limited possibilities he had to work with.

Great entry, may the Force be with you!
