100 Episodes of The Clone Wars: A Reflection

Season Five.

I can hardly believe it. When I first arrived at Lucasfilm and George and I had our first meetings to discuss the The Clone Wars, he spoke of doing at least a hundred episodes. Well, in Season Five we will pass the 100 episode mark, and keep right on going. At the time, back in 2005, it was hard to imagine 100 episodes; we had a very small staff back then, and barely an idea of what the show might look like, or how we would achieve some of the ambitious visuals we were exploring.

We always talk about how we have explored new ways to make the show, how we started to write the episodes with a more serious dramatic tone. How we started to follow live action cameras and filmmaking techniques more directly. We changed our thought process for how we did everything on the series from Season One to Season Five. With every opportunity we had, we would try to improve and expand the universe of The Clone Wars, to try and emulate the Star Wars films we all knew and loved. But through all the years, and all the ideas, there has always been one consistent element in The Clone Wars, and that is a talented, dedicated, and highly creative Team of people who come together each day to tackle the challenges we face, and make this show the best it can possibly be.

A director can have vision. I can know exactly how I ”want” something to look, but without the collective imagination and dedication of the Team nothing will happen, and the stories cannot be told. I cannot begin to tell you what a privilege it is to work with the crew of The Clone Wars every day. I ask a lot of them, and they give me their all; they sacrifice a tremendous amount of time to make every aspect of The Clone Wars work, because they believe in these stories. They work as a team, and they have pride in what they do.

Besides the Crew that works directly with me on Clone Wars there are a vast number of people at Lucasfilm that are a part of getting the episodes out to the viewers. It takes an enormous amount of collaboration and communication to make it all work. And let’s not forget the Team at Cartoon Network who we have been with now for Five Seasons, and the tremendous job they have done working with us.

Throughout Season Five I will do my best to bring you interesting information and stories about the series, but today I just wanted to tip my hat to my crew and my company, Lucasfilm Ltd. It was a dream of mine to get to work here one day, and I will never take that for granted, and I will never be able to say thank you enough, to the people here that make it all work. Enjoy these pictures, which are just a look at some of the amazing people that have created The Clone Wars over the years.

And one last thing — there seems to be a sentiment, or a feeling, that Season Five is somehow an end. That because we hit the magic number of 100, we are somehow at the finish line. Well, I can tell you that is not so. I think of Season Five as a beginning, a beginning of the best stories and animation we have ever done. We are only now beginning to reach our potential creatively, and my Team and I have no interest in stopping. Truly, the best is yet to come. Happy Season Five, Star Wars fans!

    Dave,

Great to read that we are not yet in the “twilight years” of the series. That reminds me, what ever happened to the Twilight? :) Congratulations to you and your team for hitting 100! The show continues to amaze me and my kids! Can’t wait to see what this season has in store for us. By the way, thank you so much for taking the time at CVI to stop for a photo with us. Very nice getting a chance to meet you!

    All the best,

    Paul in Boston

darthpurge – “That reminds me, tever happened to the Twilight?”

I can answer that for you. But I would be spoiling the surprise. If you like the Twilight, you are going to be quite disappointed.
A hint towards the particular point of interest of your quote is watch the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5 trailer (the dramatic 3:26 trailer, not the 2:25 one). Near the epic ending of the trailer and find your clue, you will.

Good it’s not the end. Fingers still crossed for a Republic Commando squad episode!

So physched for this season! The first episode was amazing and I can’t wait to see whats in store.
Hopefully there is an episode with Delta or Skirita boys. #RepublicCommando

I thought it was everybody’s dream to work at Lucasfilm :)

Also, George looks a little like Santa in the top picture.

Thank you for this article, and in particular your “one last thing”. Reading (all over the internet) that season 5 is expected to be the final season (well, maybe a season 6…) was a real shocker to me personally and was probably fueled mostly by the time slot change to Saturday morning. I’m glad to hear that’s not the case, as this show has really reached new heights every season, both artistically and story-wise, and I hope to see just how far you can take it.

Thanks for all the hard work from you and your staff – it is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND ENJOYED by Star Wars fans, young and old! I hope you know that you’ve created some of the best characters and Star Wars moments since the films themselves. Congrats on 100!!! Looking forward to 100 more! MTFBWY

  5. avatar sompeetalay says:

Congratulations ! I love the show, but I just wish it was easier to watch in Belgium. And I would love to see more books being released about the series. Some serious sourcebooks instead simple books for kids. There are plenty of adult fans who love the show as well.

    • avatar Firebird says:

Have you got the Art of The Clones Wars? I’d LOVE them to come out with another one to cover seasons 2 & 3 and then one for 4 & 5 :D

  6. avatar DJubei says:

All this time you people has made magic… Thanks for that.

  7. avatar Pete Vilmur says:

Congrats Dave and everyone at Lucasfilm Animation — the quality of the stories and presentation has really lived up to the brand, and I can’t wait to see where you’ll take Season 6. Top marks to all the folks at Big Rock, Singapore and CGCG!

  8. avatar Oxward321 says:

    Congrats! :)

Nice to hear that The Clone Wars will go on. I am so pumped for this season! Been randomly watching episodes from the other seasons. Just showing myself in all the Clone Wars goodness.

  9. avatar Harris says:

Dave, are you holding a sword at the top of the blog? That’s just cool! Congrats and looking forward to Season Five and beyond.

  10. Congratulations and Dave on 100 episodes of Star Wars The Clone Wars. The Clones continues to get better and better with each new season. the animation and the sound for the opening episode of season 5 of Clone Wars was amazing. It just amazing how far the show has come since season 1 and the clone wars movie with the animation. Keep up the good Dave.

  11. avatar Aps says:

I will just leave here something that someone wrote on theforce.net forums:

“There are those of us out there who spend our hard earned money on the books and comics, and were told that they were the official continuation of the saga. Then Clone wars comes along and starts contradicting stuff that they DON’T need to be contradicting. The EXACT SAME story can be told on any episode of TCW, with some minor adjustments made so that us EU fans (and there are a LOT of us) aren’t being spit on every time TCW decides to kill somebody for dramatic effect. Use a different Jedi, one that hasn’t been killed off already in a book or comic. Hell, better yet, create some bloody NEW characters for us to grow attached to, and kill one of them off.

I’ve spent a LOT of money on the EU, and because of TCW I feel that some of that money has been wasted, and also that I was lied to way back when when I was told the EU was the official continuation of the SW story.

I don’t like being lied to.”

  12. avatar John L. says:

Excellent show. I’m with YodaMac for a 100 more!

  13. avatar Jon says:

Thank You Dave. This is the greatest show in existence and it is so worth waking up early on saturdays to watch. Thank you for the hard work you and everyone put into this show. Thank you also for the character of Ahsoka and all the great things you have her and Anakin do and the impact having a padawan has on him. Thanks again

  14. avatar Jo says:

Congratulations! This is a major accomplishment coming for a series I highly admire and praise. What Dave, George Lucas and the rest of the amazing crew have done is pure gold and I look forward to more! I need more of The Clone Wars! :D

I’m a Star Wars fan from the very begining and this show is a great companion piece for the epic live action movies, please keep The Clone Wars going and hopefully move on to a new spin off Star Wars series sometime in the future wether its animated or live action it doesnt matter just BRING ON MORE STAR WARS!!!Keep up the great work Lucasfim.

  17. avatar shazbazzar says:

This is something I’ve been wanting to hear from Dave Filoni for a long, long time:

“I think of Season Five as a beginning, a beginning of the best stories and animation we have ever done. We are only now beginning to reach our potential creatively, and my Team and I have no interest in stopping.”

Thank you, Dave and company for a great show from the beginning — that consistently is getting better and better. The characters have always been fantastic. The story lines are incredible (in each episode, in the arcs, and the threads that have been developing since August 2008)! The animation continually improves and the “camera work” has just hit a grand new high!

My kids (the shazlings) and I have been keeping up with TCW since the very beginning — and we haven’t lost any of our fervor for this show. (In fact, we’ve been more amp’d up than ever since this time last year.) We were thrilled to be able to sneak a peek at something new while we were at Celebration VI; what a rush that was! I hope to see many more seasons of TCW and other projects from you and your amazing team, Dave. Thanks for making REAL Star Wars!

  18. avatar Jamie says:

I sort of WANT Season 5 to be the final season. Wrap up Rex, Ahsoka, Maul, Savage, Mandalorian’s storylines and then go into a new era.

Why don’t we travel over Order 66? Or have a Rebellion era animated show? Or the Old Republic?

The Clone Wars has had a good run but I think it’s time to tie up the show, before it jumps the shark.

  19. [...] is now online, and Dave Filoni wrote up a peice for the StarWars.com Blog relecting on 100 episodes of the show. Leland Chee has addressed fan’s (spoilery) continuity [...]

  20. avatar shadow3605 says:

nice pics later can i ask you a few questions please????!!!!

  21. avatar Mike S says:

I’ve been a huge fan of the Star Wars series since 1977 and felt somewhat saddened both times, that each trilogy had come to completion – as that meant the end of any new “Star Wars” to look forward to.

Big thanks to Dave, George and the team, for helping keep the mythology alive and giving us something new to look forward to each WEEK, instead of having to wait three (or sixteen) years, for a new adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

I am glad to hear, that we’re not near the end of THE CLONE WARS, but when it finally does – PLEASE CONSIDER creating another animated series in a different era perhaps?

There is…that three year gap in between ANH and ESB that has hardly been explored… *Wink*

  22. avatar Sady says:

Between you and Lucasfilm, you have given my family so much to share I will always be grateful. We have that great picture we took with you in our album, and my daughter cherishes her Captain Rex mask you signed for her.

Congratulations in the 100 episodes and may you have a 1000 more. You and your guys/gals have been awesome and have given us more Star Wars than we can eve hope for!

May the Force be with you! Always!

  23. avatar Grant says:

Season 5 could be the best ever. With the exception if he faulty seaon 3, The show has been getting better each year. As long as the quality is maintained then I don’t see why you should stop.

Especially since the live-action show is many years away and there are no more live-action films.

  24. [...] rumors about The Clone Wars being canceled! This is definitely a MUST READ!” (Read the post here.) Is there a feeling within The Clone Wars cast that “This is coming to an end.”? Because it [...]

  25. avatar Marcello Jun says:

Congratulations, Dave and crew. You have all restored our faith in the Star Wars saga…

…but what’s the word on Season Six???

  26. avatar Thor Reep says:

Mr.Filoni, I have been a ravid star wars fan ever since movies came out. I’m 23 yrs old. Watching the movies after episode 3 was done it was epic and sad but soon Clone wars was coming to TV. I knew will be great. I think watching the show is better and more upscale than watching the movies. Its amazing I love it. Congrats to season 5 even though we are closer andd closer coming to the events of Episode 3 can’t wait to see how it all comes together for final time. Have a question will we ever will see an episode when Maul meets Darth Sidious has revenge on him? Or Have Count Dooku put a bounty on someone to kill so he ask Boba Fett to do the job and wears mandalorean armor? And also battle on Planet Hoth again? Thanx sincerely, Thor from Ohio

  27. avatar clone wars fan says:

Dave, I love your show, I think its the best on TV, I love it as much as the movies, maybe even more. When you made this post, a month ago, I was happy to learn the show wasn’t close to being over. But now that Disney is taking over Lucasfilms, is it still true? Could the show suffer a premature end because of the change of power? Please answer. I, along with all the fans of your show, fear that Disney’s taking over might kill the Clone Wars. You have always been so kind to us. Please be like that once again, and tell us what you know.

  28. avatar aronrellidiussorr says:

    Dave,

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the 100 episode mark. This was such a big event for me, I even put it on my calendar in BIG letters. And all that excitement I had for “Missing in Action” and all the long waiting was worth it!
When a TV series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars hits their 100th episode, you have to make it a very dramatic and unsuspecting episode. And you and your team exceded that. Great job!
Oh, I was just watching the featurette for “Missing in Action” and you said that you hope that Gregor lives on to make another appearance in The Clone Wars… (FOR THOSE OTHER THAN DAVE READING THIS, IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANY SPOILERS OR KNOW BETTER, STOP READING. THIS IS PRIVATE INFO (for me that is). IF YOU KNOW WHAT’S RIGHT, YOU WILL STOP READING NOW, ASIDES DAVE FILONI.)
… you were going to get your wish without even asking.
I am currently creating novels based on the TV series for the gang at Skywalker Ranch and everybody involved with the creation of the episodes of the series, and at the end of the episode, I felt that I should have his point of view after the explosion as he clings to life in the hellish agony of the after-effects of surviving a mass-explosion caused by the detonation of highly-explosive Rhydonium.
I hope either you or George or any of the crew enjoy that fact. Also, I was thinking of maybe having Gregor get revenge on Morkus for enslaving him before searcing for any transportation off-world.
If there was anything you or George Lucas or any of the crew was thinking of for Gregor’s possible survival, you can reply to my message and give me any details you were thinking of (if possible, a chat in private would probably be best so there is no disappointment for the “ultra-fans” out there that might peek at this part.)
But congratulations for reaching the 100th episode of the series. It was really one-of-a-kind. And I was touched by the ending of the episode. And the music was a real suspense generator. Not just because of how it was performed, but because of its original use for 99’s death in episode 3.02. It’s really the “Fall of a True Soldier” music.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot! Congrats on Season 5! It has had such a dark story since Darth Maul returned last season (bravo for making such a fantastic season finale, especially having it on my birthday!!! BEST BIRTHDAY EVER, AND I THANK YOU FOR IT!!!). I look foreward to “Eminence”, “Shades of Reason” and “The Lawless”.
That’s all I have to say.
May the Force be with you!
