When I was only 5, I bought my first Star Wars book – it was The Art of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Mr. McQuarrie’s pictures were far and away my favorites, and the many hours I spent poring over it led to the book falling apart and me buying a second copy.
RIP Ralph McQuarrie – I hope you know you left your mark on me.

I’m glad he’s getting the recognition he deserved, He’s as important to Star Wars success as John Williams was. I think Episodes I-III would have been a lot better had he been able to be in charge of the concept design.

Ralph actually PAINTED Star Wars. He visualized a dream…which became my passion…

A milestone in art & creativity is lost, but his work will be there forever… and he will be rememberd.

Would Star Wars would have had the impact it did without Ralph McQuarrie’s wonderful designs (and John Williams stirring score) adding to the production values? George Lucas hired the right people for the job and it all came together. I was a wide-eyed 7 year old when I saw Star Wars for the first time, and it was like nothing I’d seen before. The droids, the ships, the technology all mesmerised me (especially the wonderful stormtrooper helmet which Andrew Ainsworth so effectively sculpted and brought to life). Years later my wife bought me the “Art Of Star Wars” books from the original trilogy I and found that almost everything was designed by Ralph McQuarrie. Bon Voyage sir, I’ll be raising a glass to your genius tonight and toasting my Shepperton Studios ANH Stunt helmet in your memory.
