The A-12 was the first incarnation of the type and was funded and operated by the CIA. It was an armed (internally) interceptor. The SR-71 ("Habu" to it's operators) was a later incarnation after the Air Force took over the project. It was updated (chines changed up front) and rather than carry missiles internally it carried photo optics. And, yes, anyone remotely familiar with the Blackbird immediately recognized the Royal Starship as the hood ornament incarnation of it. Absolutely gorgeous! The A-12 is NOT a prototype for the SR-71.
