Dave Filoni Talks Clone Wars, Wolves & Football

StarWars.com Team | March 19, 2010

Mandy from TheForce.net chats with Clone Wars Director Dave Filoni about Season 2 and 3 challenges, goals for The Clone Wars, EU, wolves and football!

Excerpt:

Tell us about the average Dave Filoni day.

I get to work around 8:00 am. I use that time to work on various projects related to Clone Wars, future designs, script revisions, shooting a scene. By 9:30 the day gets going normally with Design dailies, then after that I might review a rough episode, watch a color episode, look at revisions, animation, color/lighting, color correct, music review. It all depends where any given episode is at and what has come in. There are also various items to troubleshoot everyday like how to deal with a large amount of characters that require cloth sim, or what language should be used on a particular view screen. No two days are the same, that’s for sure.

You’ve been terribly diplomatic regarding the various arguments over supposed continuity and the Expanded Universe. Are you pleased or have you enjoyed the tie-in work for The Clone Wars (The Karens, Dark Horse, Republic Heroes, etc.)?

I understand the fans’ passion and respect the fact that they have invested a lot of time studying the EU and have grown fond of many characters in it. However, at the end of the day this is George’s universe; he created it, and he has the right to set things the way he sees them. As someone working in the Star Wars Universe I have had incredible access, and time with George, to make sure this series lines up with his universe the way he wants. It’s like when he makes a Star Wars film and produces it, he’s that involved with The Clone Wars.

I do my best to make George aware of existing EU material when I know we are crossing into territory that has been covered, like the Mandalorians, and we debate what might stay and how things can fit, but we can never limit what we are trying to do creatively because of existing EU material. I am aware of a lot of the tie-in work with Clone Wars, and even though there is not a lot compared to other areas of Star Wars, it is almost impossible to keep up with it all. It doesn’t really effect what we do on the series, because our production schedules are so different. If there is a character we like, they may make it into the show in the background possibly, similar to how Aayla appeared in AOTC.

Yeah, so when are we going to see some Republic Commandos in action? I’m not picky, but could it be Boss, Sev, Scorch, and Fixer? Cuz that would be awesome.

  2. avatar CC-328 says:

If they brought in the Rep Coms, I’d be so happy I could cry. Then I would cry because I would be afraid that the characters would be ruined. Still, it’d be cool to see Delta in action or inaction.

  3. avatar Jason says:

I’d like to see the Commandos, but with the way DF and crew are doing things, they will have pink armor.

  4. avatar go USA says:

why oh, why did they not keep tabs on Karen Traviss when she wrote those books (rep. com.)originally?

  5. avatar JaSven says:

I very much liked Karen Traviss’ work but so far I have not seen much in Clone Wars that wrecked the EU she created- yes it is different but lets face it- the EU has rounded out many stories with slightly different tellings. Just like in real life the ‘truth’ is seen differently by different people experiencing it so nothing was ruined, much could have easily been explained away- its a shame she left the genre

  6. avatar go USA says:

JaSven- many things are VERY different- especially Mandalore, the planet, its culture, and the “mandalorian army”. also- dooku’s relationship with OTHER mandos

  7. avatar pronostic says:

Thanks for this post ! I’d like to see commandos too !!!!

  8. avatar ... says:

In the secound episode of the first season, bost and stinker, had a redish colord armor. Now in the secound season, wolfe pack had a bluish armor, now why did that change?

  9. avatar Timothy Read says:

I am wondering if there is or will be a book that will be available that shows the concept art from Star Wars the Clone Wars series. In many of the question answer videos you Dave features concept art from various episodes to help answer the viewers questions. I am wondering if there is a way to see these images.

    Dave Filoni,
Why do you kill off so much important clones I think are awesome. For example , Commander Ponds, Buzz, Sgt. Denal, Echo, Hevy, Commander Colt, The Blue ARC trooper, Green leader, Fives, and 99 ? Can you please bring back Echo or Denal, pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase? I dont know maybe Echo ran away from the explosion. Or Denal got away in a ship. Just please make one clone return . Now most of my friends are not going to watch the Clone Wars, since you just killed off the awesome, splendid, swell, elite, Echo! Please bring back Echo , and not in a sequel. A lot , actually even most of my friends are not watching the Clone Wars since you killed off all these wonderful clones. Please bring back Echo , and reply please

  11. avatar Alpha- 21 says:

Hello there is a character that you killed off the show that wasn’t supposed to be killed. That clone is Denal. You made him die as a sergeant. He becomes a commander and you killed him off before youeven made him lieutenant. Also, why did Echo have to die? Couldn’t it have been Fives, or did you want people to cry because Echo died. Plus where is Bacara? You had Ki Audi Mundi leading Commander Jet but he actually leads Bacara. If you read this please reply with a reason for Echo and Denal’s deaths (Denal should actually be alive more then Echo), and why Jet was Ki Audi Mundi’s commander instead of Bacara and why he didn’t have Galactic Marines. Thanks and keep on Cloning ;3

  12. avatar Alpha- 21 says:

@Skyper- Yes, Denal should be alive and Echo too. Look at the freeze shot. Echo is jumping. Denal becomes a commander and he dies WTH!!! So yeah make a few clones not dead. You made a kid cry because Echo died DF. Anyway I want MORE WOLFFE!!!! Ok keep on cloning ;3

  13. avatar Timothy Read says:

    hello Dave

Are you planning on making available the line art that has been used for Star Wars? I guess what I am talking about is the full profile images.

  14. avatar Juan Leyva says:

okay, i have a few long things i wanna say to Dave Filoni
    1. Mandalore: Thier leader was Jango Fett, it was mostly rural and EVERYONE had mando armor, Obi-wan was not in love with Satine, but with another jedi named Siri Tachi.
    2. 501st chain of command, the commander of the 501st is Senior Clone Commander Appo and Clone Commander Vill was sort of like his deputy commander, trust me i know how this stuff works, i’m in the Civil Air Patrol, Rex falls under their command, not above it.
    3. What’s with the cheap prtrayal of the clones? Seriously, that doesn’t look like ten years of training to me when they miss ALMOST EVERY freakin’ shot, they have better aim and unarmed combat skills, that’s why it was hard to believe that Denal could not kill Bane, Bane is not that dangerous.
    4. I spotted this in one episode, you NEVER EVER salute with your left hand, always with your right, if you are carrying something like a helmet or a rifle, you carry it in your left hand, unless of course youre in combat.
    5. Just like you came up with a story to bring back Darth Maul, which will be pretty bizzare i’m sure, I made up a story as to how you could bring Denal back, which is not crazy, since you were able to bring someone back who got cut in half and thrown down a bottomless pit.
    6. I agree that we should see more clone commandos, but please don’t swcrew with Karen Traviss’ storyline, she canceled her last book and the next video game because if that, which we were all looking so forward to.
All these points I brought up may not be agreeable with, but if you don’t believe me, read every book and comic there is to read, look it up, you can look all this stuff up with the exception of points 4 and 5, in point five i was just describing customs and courtesies in the military, which now that i think about it you can look that up as well, and if you consider my story about Denal (which i severely doubt) let me know, it also involves making him an arc trooper. i know it was a lot but thanks for listening.

  15. avatar CT-7852 says:

will you start putting out the images of the clone trooper armor because i like to draw on my lego clone troopers to make commanders like ponds

  16. in the clone wars phase 2 same color armour you now who
