In so many, by this point, famous interviews with George Lucas revealed the origins for Ewoks were chopping Wookies in half. He always wanted a planet of Wookies, but they were too expensive for the first movie, so since he'd already established Wookies by Jedi, he changed the idea into something else. Somewhere, somehow, Amanda knew this basic idea. And then the behind-the-scenes became twisted up in the reality of the film and there's this brilliant amalgam of fact/fiction/truth/just plain wrong. That's why I like the Wookie/Ewok part.
