Evolution of Gaming Lightsabers

If you’ve played enough Star Wars video games over the years, hopefully you’ve noticed the evolution of lightsabers from overly-pixelized sticks to the elegant weapons meant for a more civilized age.

Take a stroll down memory lane with GamesRadar.com Editor Brett Elston as he reminds us of such classics as Atari’s Jedi Arena, Star Wars on NES, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi, Star Wars Trilogy Arcade, Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles, Star Wars: Obi-Wan, and Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast among others.

Here’s an excerpt:

Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi (PSOne/1997)
Often called the worst Star Wars game of all time, or the worst fighting game of all time, or the worst anything that appeared on Earth in 1997, Teras Kasi can still proudly claim to be the first one-on-one fighting game with lightsabers. But, in keeping with its immense suckage, they don’t cut people into bits or behave like energy weapons at all. Might as well be a stick.

But the best part is the list of lightsaber knock-offs used by characters in the games Time Killers, Mega Man X3, Einhander, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Silent Hill 3, Dead Rising, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, and even World of Warcraft!

    Nice–although…..

“Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64/2000)

The reckless 64 branding continued well into 2000 with this so-so Kirby platformer that allowed the puffball to mix powers together instead of using one at a time. Fusing shock with cutter yielded this Darth Maul-inspired yellow lightsaber, well before the prequels established such a color as canon.”

Ummm–are they saying that the prequels featured a yellow lightsaber at some point? I, er, think I missed that one… :)

Attack of the clones had all colors of lightsabers.

They didn’t cut people to bits in KOTOR or Jedi Outcast (most of the time) and those were good games. I doubt they will slice in the new Soul Calibur.

    Just sayin’ is all…

We finally started getting some of that in Jedi Academy, but it wasn’t as satisfying as it would be to chop someone in half. Like Darth Maul. That would be sic.
