Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself mindset. Maker Faire happens May 3 and 4 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds in California. It’s a fun event for creative people of all ages who love to tinker and make things.
Whether it’s playing with robots (and there’s a lot of them!), checking out huge fire-breathing contraptions from Survival Research Laboratories, gawking at Tesla Coils, drag racing power tools, making all kinds of crafts, or just having fun geeking out, there’s plenty for everyone to do.
Here’s a selection of Makers and Exhibits that Star Wars fans might dig the most:
R2-D2 Astromech Droids — R2 Builders Club
Members of the R2 Builders Club will be roaming around the event throughout the weekend with frequent stops back at their Rebel Base to charge our batteries. There we can answer questions on how easy it is to get started building your very own astromech droid.
Star Wars Crafts: Marble Magnets
Want to make an Admiral Ackbar shrine on your fridge? Feel like turning your locker over to the dark side? Now you can make one-of-a-kind cool Star Wars magnets with help from Starwars.com Kids Crafts Editor Bonnie Burton. (hey, that’s me!)
Bay Area LEGO Users’ Group
The Bay Area LEGO Users’ Group (BayLUG) will be displaying a detailed model train layout, passing through urban, suburban, industrial, and rural scenery, all constructed from LEGO bricks. We will also have a variety of other LEGO models on display covering a range of subject matter.
Crystal Focus LED “lightsaber” Project Matthew Carauddo
The most amazing and dynamic sound & light driver board you’ll ever see. Made specifically for “LED saber props,” in the spirit of the Star Wars films by Lucasfilm. (No affiliation or association with Lucasfilm, LTD or Lucasarts.)
Wall-E Toy Robots
Disney’s new line of robotic toys — Ultimate WALL·E and iDance WALL·E will debut at Maker Faire.
