Indy Saved by Manchester United

March 27, 2008

In a recent interview, Indiana Jones actor said he once feared he would not complete an early installment of the Indiana Jones franchise — until he was saved by medics working for a British soccer team. While riding an elephant in Sri Lanka during filming on Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom in 1984, the actor suffered a chronic back injury.

Ford failed to recover from his injury and was forced to seek medical treatment after returning to the U.K. He was surprised when help was offered by British soccer team Manchester United.

Ford recalls, “I couldn’t find anyone to treat me in London, Harley Street doctors were afraid of the liability issues. I finally got the Manchester United team doctor to treat me. They had to strap me to a trolley with a bottle of nitrous oxide. I had to be carried feet first down the narrow, twisting stairs and was taken by ambulance to Manchester to see the doctor.”

I was gobsmacked to read this, being a United fan when I was a kid (Baggies all the way now!)

Back then Big Ron Atkinson was the manager and United had an awesome team – Mark Hughes, Ray Wilkins, Kevin Moran – and I can only imagine what it must have been like for Indy to walk in!

What a top piece, but it alwasys makes me laugh when American sites talk about United being a ’soccer’ team, as if it needs explaining. Man Utd are THE single biggest, most widely supported and richest club of ANY sport on the planet (well, this planet at least!).

    Top piece Bonnie!

@Mark Newbold: Yeah we call Brit football “soccer” over here. Don’t ask me why, I have no idea.

Of course, this may also be a ploy for me to lure David Beckham into a Star Wars Rocks interview as well. ;-)

Indy saved by the Mighty Red Army.

*sings ” Glory.. Glory Man United! ”

Red and I are Man U supporters… And we plan on taking our delayed Honeymoon in Manchester to see Man U play in Old Tafford… and then to take the Coronation Street tour. That will be the ultimate redandjonny shoot….on the cobbles, out front of the Rovers Return.

Good point, even Spike from Buffy was a Man Utd fan!
FYI Bonnie, there is a big Star Wars celebrity you haven’t interviewed. Robbie Williams. Sure, he’s not huge in the States, but everywhere else on the planet he’s just about the biggest star there is. He’s Star Wars MAD! And the ultimate SW fan – Brian May of Queen. Proper fan, he’s had tours of the Ranch and owns two of everything. Legand has it he had a wing of his house built to house all the collection.
