Darth Vader Crime Spree Team | March 16, 2009

It’s one thing to dress up like the Dark Vader and be the king of the convention, and it’s quite another thing to dress up like the Dark Lord of the Sith and rob a movie theater.

truTV reports:

Star Wars fans in Springfield, Ill., must have been shocked when Darth Vader revealed himself not as Luke’s father, but as a movie-theater thief. Police say a man dressed as Darth Vader walked into a Showplace Eight theater May 21 and shoved an employee out of the way, grabbed cash from the register and then dashed into a nearby wooded area.

Obama More Powerful than Skywalker?

Bonnie Burton | February 13, 2009

President Barack Obama has achieved superstar status complete with a comic book cover hanging out with Spider-Man. But is he an actual hero? George Lucas thinks so. Darth Vader better watch his back.

Yahoo News reports:

Star Wars creator George Lucas was in Washington Wednesday night for the Ford’s Theatre reopening celebration where both he and screen legend Sidney Poitier were being honored with the Ford Theatre Society’s Lincoln medal in a ceremony attended by President Barack Obama, a Lincoln aficionado.

Lucas says that, in a contest between Luke Skywalker and Obama, our 44th president wins hands down — even without the lightsaber.

Yoda to De-stress Returning Soldiers Team | February 13, 2009

Soldiers returning from their time fighting overseas may be looking toward a tiny, green Jedi for guidance. Ottawa is turning to the wisdom enshrined in Jedi master Yoda in counselling its soldiers on how to overcome war-related stress.

The green, pint-sized character’s advice is part of the video script the Canadian government is currently studying, through which soldiers returning from Afghanistan will be given tips on coping with combat zone stress, reports The Globe and Mail, Toronto.

Like Yoda did in the George Lucas production, Canadian soldiers will be told to reach deep within themselves and reclaim their mental health. “Yoda was right, if you believe you will achieve,” the script counsels the soldiers.

The video is currently being shot at the Canadian Forces’ base of Valcartier, and will feature different techniques for de-stressing, including “disidentification.” Under the latter, the script has a soldier saying: “There is anger in me but I am not that anger, I am more than that.”

New Mustafar-like Planet Discovered?

Bonnie Burton | February 4, 2009

Astronomers using the COROT space telescope have discovered what may be the smallest extrasolar planet (measuring less than twice the size of Earth) orbiting a sun-like star. The planet (seen as that block dot in the above photo) sounds a little like Mustafar, minus the Jedi duel.

One big difference in the newfound planet compared to Earth: COROT-Exo-7b is located very close to its star, orbiting once every 20 hours. Its temperature is so high, ranging from 1,832 to 2,732 degrees Fahrenheit that the researchers say the exoplanet could be covered in lava or water vapor.

The density of the planet is still under investigation, though scientists say it may be rocky like Earth and covered in liquid lava. COROT-Exo-7b may also belong to a class of planets that are thought to be made up of water and rock in almost equal amounts. Given the high temperatures measured, the planet would likely be a very hot and humid place.
