A Star Wars Love Story, Mandalorian Style

Mandalorian Mercs fan group trading card

Series-0 MMCC trading card.

Ten years ago, a silver haired male Zabrak in a dirty black desert coat stumbled into Mos Eisley Cantina. While enjoying a mug of Jawa beer at the bar, out of the corner of his eye he noticed a green female Twi’lek on the dance floor. She wore black CorSec issue trousers while waving a staff around haphazardly as she danced, which immediately caught attention of the Zabrak at the bar. Should he shoot, duck for cover, or attempt to rescue her from herself? Noticing the Zabrak staring at her, she turned around and said “Hello!”

Why Valentine’s Day Is Better with Star Wars

Star Wars Valentine's Day chocolates

With the new year well underway, specialty chocolate boxes and hearts of red, white, and pink on display signal that February has arrived. Valentine’s Day is often thought of as a day for romance and lovers. While talking about the mid-month event on the latest episode of Fangirls Going Rogue with my co-host Teresa Delgado and special guest Amy Ratcliffe, we recalled how we celebrated the holiday in our youth. For children, giving Valentine’s cards isn’t so much about romance, but rather a way to remind others of our friendship. In an age of social media friends, when connections are often electronic, the three of us all decided that the holiday provides a good incentive to express not just romantic feelings, but also to reach out and remind our friends that we were thinking about them too.

How to Make a Star Wars Paper Rose

Amy Ratcliffe | February 10, 2014

If you’re planning to pick up flowers this Valentine’s Day, you’re probably going with roses. It’s the most popular choice for the holiday, and for good reason — roses are classic. You can’t go wrong. The only negatives are that florists know the stems are in high demand and mark up prices, and no matter how beautiful they are, real flowers die. Why not opt for a paper, Star Wars-themed solution? You can craft lovely, personalized roses from the pages of comic books, magazines, or books. Crafting the faux flowers just takes a few supplies and patience.

The Best Holidays and Celebrations in the Galaxy…and Empire Day, Too

Coruscant celebration from Return of the Jedi

It’s not because the word “wars” can be found in the saga’s title that the people of the galaxy never made time for a proper holiday or celebration. Holidays were a part of everyday life to the average Barada or Wedge, if they were lucky enough to live in freedom or on a planet where government didn’t suppress celebrations. But then again, even the Hutts gave their slaves a holiday that “rewarded” their servants with festivities.

The heroes of the saga took part in several celebrations that happened after important victories over the forces of evil. When the Trade Federation was defeated, Queen Amidala handed Boss Rugor Nass the Globe of Peace in the city of Theed, and united the Gungans and the Naboo after many years of uneasy relationships. After the destruction of the Death Star Princess Leia Organa bestowed Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the new poster boys of the Rebel Alliance, with Medals of Bravery (which was later also given to Chewbacca). The biggest celebration probably took place after the second Death Star had been destroyed and Emperor Palpatine had been killed. Not just on Endor, but throughout the galaxy, supporters of the Rebel Alliance and the ideals of the Republic and democracy, cheered, danced, and toppled statues.

When it Comes to Christmas Music, Is There Anything Better Than Christmas in the Stars? (Trick Question!)

Christmas in the Stars 1980 LP cover

Christmas in the Stars 1980 LP cover

What can you get a Wookiee for Christmas when he already owns a comb? No, not a hairbrush. And if you don’t immediately get what I’m talking about, you’re probably not as much of a Star Wars trivia expert as you think.

Actually, despite the festiveness of the season, I’m perturbed. I’ve heard “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” at least four or five times on the radio already, but not once have I heard “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” And what about “The Odds Against Christmas?” Those, along with “What Can You Get a Wookiee…” are three of the nine tunes on Christmas in the Stars: The Star Wars Christmas Album, which originally came out as an LP (remember vinyl records?) in 1980 from RSO Records — and fairly quickly went out of print.
