Made in China: Building the Falcon in Shanghai

Mary Franklin | December 11, 2013

The challenge: design and build a “real scale” exhibit incorporating approximately 25% of Han Solo’s beloved YT-1300 light freighter, the Millennium Falcon, then assemble it inside the New Exhibition Center in Pudong, Shanghai, China. The entire project, decided by the Disney China consumer products team for the China Toy Fair less than three weeks from the event, had to go from planning to drawing to construction to execution in that very short amount of time. I happily volunteered to help with design, content, and approvals, but could it be done?

The answer: “This is China. We can do anything.”

I heard that phrase much more than once while I was in Shanghai for Toy Fair and the Disney Consumer Products licensee meeting. I hoped to provide experience in and knowledge of the galaxy far, far, away, and help the process as best I could. I quickly learned that when my colleagues quoted the above, they were not kidding. We made changes and edits on the fly right up to the morning the show opened, but the result was a spectacular display that did indeed look like the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy on the outside, and house a Star Wars movie timeline and licensed toy exhibit on the inside.

Mandalorian Mercs from across the US/Canada at DragonCon 2007.

Welcome to the second installment of “Heeding the Call,” in which I recount the history of the Mandalorian Mercs fan group. (And a big thanks to everyone who commented and wrote in about part one.) Let’s resume our flashback to 2007, shall we?

Star Wars Actors Hit Dallas Comic Con Fan Days with Official Pix

Chris Wyman | December 3, 2013

Dallas Comic Con Fan Days logo

What originally started out as strictly a Star Wars event, Fan Days has become something of a pop culture show held each October at the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas. This is one of three different shows we put on in the Lone Star state each year. Our media guests range from Star Wars to Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica to The Walking Dead, Back to the Future to Lord of the Rings and everything in between from both film and television.

This past October 4-6, we had a great lineup of Star Wars talent for attendees to meet. As usual, I had each guest into the Official Pix autograph office during the show to sign for us on a variety of items in varying numbers. Personally, this is my favorite time with our guests. It’s quiet, the A/C is cranked down, there’s an ice-cold water station and comfortable chairs making it one of the more pleasant locations.

Star Wars at GeekGirlCon 2013

Fangirls-GGC-SW-Panel

In its third year, Seattle’s GeekGirlCon highlights what fans can accomplish when they put their hearts and minds into a passion project. The convention, which is run by fans for fans, sold out before the doors opened. My experience with GeekGirlCon exemplifies the best thing about conventions: getting to meet new people — specifically, in my case, lots of new Star Wars fans.

Somewhere in the Ventilation Shaft: Bounty Hunter Reunion At RICC

John "Dak" Morton | November 25, 2013

BountyHunters

By skybridges and streets, according to event organizer Steve Perry, well over 30,000 attendees descended on Providence’s Rhode Island Convention Center to gather at the 2013 Rhode Island Comic Con. Among a huge list of media guests and artists, Perry featured what he billed as a “very, very rare bounty hunters reunion.” Several jumped across The Pond via the Leisure Corridor. Dak made the transit north from Tierfon on the I-95 hyperlane, re-entering realspace somewhere to the west to stay at the baronial hall of a local lord and lady (a noted paleontologist pair) on the Waterman Reservoir. Headlining the con was the debonair onetime gambler and baron administrator of Cloud City, Lando Calrissian. RICC proved to be an epic Underworld gathering.

World Record Night at Rancho Obi-Wan Comes with Auctions, Celebrities, and Even Balloon Pops!

World Record Night logo

Party time! Who among us doesn’t love to hear those words…especially if Star Wars is involved. Well, perhaps the party planner who has hundreds of details to attend to, tight budgets, deadlines to meet, occasional quirky people to contend with — and a reputation to uphold.

We’re just beginning to recover from the Nov. 2 World Record Night at Rancho Obi-Wan, an evening designed to mark our second anniversary as a nonprofit museum and to celebrate our inclusion in Guinness World Records 2014 as the “Largest Collection of Star Wars Memorabilia.” As important, the event was a fundraiser to help us continue our mission of Inspiring through the Force of Imagination, which is a nice way of saying — like any nonprofit — we need to keep raising money to stay alive. More on that later.

Mary Franklin | November 1, 2013

Not long ago on Twitter I asked for your favorite Star Wars Celebration Europe memories and photographs for Bantha Tracks, the Star Wars fan newsletter. You sent some beauties, and we thank you for that!

This “photo book,” the final installment of a three-part online series, is a great teaser for what will appear in the December edition of Bantha Tracks in Star Wars Insider.

F.A.C.T.S. 2013: Report from the Largest Convention in the Benelux

Tim Veekhoven | October 29, 2013

One of the most enjoyable aspects of collecting is returning home from a convention and unloading your loot. Where will the new items find their rightful place? Didn’t I already have this figure? And sometimes, to your delight, you might have even forgotten that you bought a certain item. F.A.C.T.S. (Fantasy Anime Comics Toys and Space) is the largest convention in the Benelux (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg) and this year the organization celebrated its twentieth anniversary. The convention has evolved throughout the years and you could easily call it the “Benelux Comic Con.” F.A.C.T.S. has always been organized in Ghent, one of the largest cities in Belgium (Flanders), and like Bruges, the city is often visited by tourists because of the medieval streets and buildings. For the fifth time the place to be was Flanders Expo, a large complex with several halls near the city.

An NYCC Snapshot of the Ever-Expanding Star Wars Universe

John "Dak" Morton | October 24, 2013

Dak approves The Making of Return of the Jedi

Rebels and Imperials converged on Gotham earlier this month for the New York Comic Con at the West Side’s Javits Center. The convergence from both Core World and Outer Rim gave evidence of the ever-expanding Star Wars universe as we continue moving into the new century and another generation.

Star Wars Reads Day II: Celebrating a Galaxy of Books

Tricia Barr | October 4, 2013

Yoda likes to read.

On September 3, Malala Yousafzai opened a library in Birmingham, England. To the crowd she said, “Some books travel with you back centuries, others take you into the future. Some take you to the core of your heart and others take you into the universe…I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through educating not only our minds, but our hearts and our souls.” Her dream of an education almost cost the young woman her life. Yet she fights backs with books and words, encouraging others to pick up a book as a step toward independence.
