SWCVI: The Maul Within

It was a no-brainer for Sam Witwer to agree to playing Darth Maul on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He said yes to Dave Filoni even though he wasn’t entirely sure how he would play the character or even how the sliced and diced Sith Lord would make a realistic comeback.

Maul wasn’t Witwer’s first foray into the Star Wars universe. He voiced Starkiller and Palpatine in The Force Unleashed, and he dipped into the Dark side of the Force as the Son in the Mortis trilogy during season three of The Clone Wars. He actually tied some of the Son’s dialogue to the mad ravings and mutterings of Maul when he is first found in his cave.

On Saturday at Star Wars Celebration Pablo Hidalgo and creature expert Tom Spina hosted a panel that focused on the aliens of the cantina seen in the original Star Wars movie.  They were joined on stage by Nick Maley who was part of the UK creature team and Jon Berg who was part of the US creature team.  Pablo said, “We conspired to create a panel that would be the ultimate panel that we would want to see if we were attending Celebration and I think we have come up with something special.”

SWCVI: Why We Love The Prequels Panel

I grew up with Star Wars, but unlike a lot of fans, I actually started with The Phantom Menace. I was eight years old in 1999, and the experience of seeing that movie did more to propel me into watching the Original Trilogy over and over again than any marketing campaign ever could. I was, quite simply, hooked. The releases of Episodes II and III completed my viewing experience, but before then, I had The Phantom Menace and its huge array of established plot lines to ponder. Starting from the beginning and then jumping ahead gave me a glimpse of the Empire and the Jedi-less galaxy that Palpatine would establish, but it wasn’t until first 2002 and finally 2005 that I would have my many “How did we get there?” questions answered.

SWCVI: A Date With a Princess

Carrie Fisher

I’ve learned a few things at Celebration VI, and I can share one piece of important advice with you: if you ever get the chance to see Carrier Fisher live, you shouldn’t miss it. Princess Leia came to the main stage tonight, and she was as charming as ever. I don’t think that even Darth Vader could have resisted her wit.

SWCVI: James Arnold Taylor’s Talking To Myself

James Arnold Taylor made me cry tonight. Twice. I won’t hold it against him though. He performed his one man show, Talking To Myself, at the Chapin Theater for 3,000 fans, and it was an experience I won’t be forgetting any time soon. Fans know him best as the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Plo Koon in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but that’s not all he does. He’s an incredibly talented voice actor, and you’ve probably heard him in more things than you can even imagine. He shared his world and skills with us tonight.

SWCVI: Smuggler’s Gambit

Smugglers Gambit

There was a lot of speculation as to what Smuggler’s Gambit would be about.  As one fan told me, “all I know is it’s a radio show written by Kyle Newman so you know it’s gonna be awesome.”  And indeed it was!  Kyle Newman began the evening by telling us a little bit about how Smuggler’s Gambit came about.  Newman said that what we were about to see was a, “Han Solo (original trilogy era) radio drama for all ages.”

SWCVI: The Future of Star Wars in 3D

Amy Ratcliffe | August 25, 2012

ep2

I went into the future of Star Wars in 3D panel excited to see clips from Attack of the Clones and walked out with a much greater appreciation for what it takes to make the films suitable for 3D. I have to admit that I didn’t realize the extent of the process. It took about a year to transform The Phantom Menace from start to finish. Impressive, most impressive. Visual effects supervisors and masters Dennis Muren and John Knoll took the stage to discuss the painstaking work that goes into the conversion process.

Today on the Fan Stage at Celebration VI, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a panel entitled “Star Wars and NASA: Science Fiction and Science Fact,” with Holly Griffith, a friend of mine who works as an International Space Station flight controller for NASA Mission Control in Houston, TX. Holly and I were joined by Travis and Michelle Fitzgerald, two fellow flight controllers on the ISS, and Dennis Bonilla, an open government consultant who works with NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. As befits such a great lineup of smart and talented space geeks (I’m excluding myself, of course!), our panel filled the 840-seat Fan Stage! (more…)
