ILM’s Model-Making Masters of the Universe

Steve Sansweet | February 11, 2013

There was a panel at a relatively small model show Saturday in the community center of my relatively small town, Petaluma, California, population 57,941. That’s not nearly as small as most semi-rural towns in wine country, but for a guy born in Philadelphia it sure is.

There were about 2,000 people who filled the center all day. The display we had at the Rancho Obi-Wan table attracted folks for the length of the show. There were babies in strollers and grizzled granddads whose lifelong hobby has been building exquisite scratch-built and model kits.

Great Moments Behind-The-Scenes at Celebration

Mary Franklin | January 22, 2013

DeathStar_Floor

“This rancor will need to travel across Florida.”

At each and every Star Wars Celebration I find myself either saying or hearing phrases that sound completely out-of-this-galaxy.

“Can we get this landspeeder in the freight elevator?”

“We are going to build a Death Star and I want you to find out how much.”

Either they sound out-of-this-galaxy, or they sound completely impossible, as in “I just lost an entire marching band.”

Typically the responses sound much more in-galaxy than the original statements:
“We can’t get Darth Vader off the ground.”
“That is because the wind is coming too strongly from a direction that threatens to blow the Darth Vader hot-air balloon right into the ExCeL Convention Center and impale it on the roof.”

yodagerman

Star Wars Celebration Europe is coming up fast. The full site has been launched, tickets go on sale tomorrow, a bevy of guests are in the hopper, and — from what we’ve seen on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram — fans are already hard at work on assembling collections and costumes for the first ever Star Wars Celebration in Germany. On this note, we’d like to take today to recommend that in between gathering together your pins, patches, and vintage action figure and/or knitting, sewing, or vacuum forming your duds for the costume contest, you also brush up on your German.

Hang On to Your Helmet — The Holidays Are Over!

Mary Franklin | January 8, 2013

cvi

For roughly the past month it’s been the same:

  • “We can rethink that floorplan after the holidays.”
  • “I can have the answers you need after the holidays.”
  • “We’ll send those links after the holidays.”
  • “After the holidays we’ll be ready to revisit this.”
  • “The document will be completed for you after the holidays.”
  • Etc. etc. etc. “after the holidays.”

Honestly, it’s a good tradition that people in the world disconnect and focus on something other than work for a few weeks each winter. Family, friends, travel, avoiding cliffs, a few good books and movies — whatever it is that refuels us, it’s probably healthy for humankind.

Star Wars Weekends 2013 Dates Announced

Gary Buchanan | December 27, 2012

“Luke, We’re gonna have company!” — Han Solo

If your starship can make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs (I’m still trying to figure out how fast that is), set your hyperdrive for the Disney’s Hollywood Studios sector for May and early June, for the 2013 edition of Star Wars Weekends.

This year’s Force-filled fun will take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 17-June 9.

James Arnold Taylor and Ashley Eckstein share a laugh on-stage at Star Wars Weekends 2012. The pair will return as Celebrity Hosts in 2013.

Celebration Europe… 2007

Mary Franklin | November 27, 2012

It’s hard for me to believe that the first Star Wars Celebration Europe was almost six years ago. Maybe that disbelief is simply a product of how long I’ve worked on Celebrations – I sure as Sith won’t admit it’s a product of my age – but it is incredible to think that it’s been so long since we produced the show for the very first time outside of the U.S.

That show was not only the first Celebration outside North America, but also a first for some other notable memories.

Celebration Europe: The Great Building Game Begins!

Mary Franklin | November 13, 2012

Unknown

Yesterday, for a good part of the day, I took over one of our big conference room tables here at Lucasfilm and started playing a big puzzle game with the floorplan of the Messe Essen in Germany.

My task: To look over all kinds of different ways to pack as much fun and excitement into our space as possible. Star Wars Celebration Europe next summer will be the biggest Star Wars event ever in Germany, and we want to make sure all the very best in Star Wars fits in the best possible way.

Corruption, Exploitation, and Decay: The Politics of Star Wars

Eric Geller | November 6, 2012

palpatine

The Star Wars movies were about many things — good versus evil, The Hero’s Journey, tolerance versus oppression, and so on — but one of the most fundamental tensions in all six films concerned the relationship between the state and its people. In the Prequel Trilogy, this emphasis on politics was more pronounced: some of the most important developments in the first three films took place in the Republic Senate, as Palpatine twisted that august body to suit his needs. When Ben Kenobi told Luke that “For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic,” that lit a firestorm of speculation about how exactly the Republic had fallen. Through carefully crafted speeches and secret plots, the newer trilogy showed us the fall of democracy itself.
