NASA to Send C-3PO to the Moon? Team | February 26, 2010

Is it just us or does NASA’s robot look a little like our favorite protocol droid C-3PO? Here’s hoping they give him better coping skills.

According to AmericaSpace:

Project M is a JSC Engineering Directorate led mission to put a lander on the moon with a robot within a 1,000 days starting Jan 1, 2010. “M” has significance in two ways. First, it is the Roman numeral for 1,000. And “M” is the first letter for “Moon.”

Jabba, You’re a Wonderful Cake

Bonnie Burton | February 16, 2010

Nothing says “Happy Birthday” like a Hutt covered in frosting. Check out this awesome Jabba the Hutt cake that would make any fan’s birthday wish come true.

This is my birthday cake this year — Jabba the Hutt. A friend of the family kindly made this for us and I think she did a fantastic job (she also made my iPhone cake 3 years ago). My four-year-old son likes Jabba’s son Rotta and requested that the cake have Jabba and Rotta hugging, so that’s what we did. Jabba is made of chocolate cake, chocolate fudge, and fondant.

I have an extensive collection of Jabba-related items (toys, collectibles, etc) that I have been cataloging on my blog.

And if you like Jabba the Hutt, you REALLY should follow that blog. It’s Huttastic!

Canned Star Wars Meat? Team | February 1, 2010

Recently, this retro (1978) Japanese commercial for canned tuna — or at least we’re guessing as much — has been making the rounds, so we couldn’t resist blogging about it.

It’s not every day you see C-3PO breaking up an epic duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker by offering them a snack of canned meat instead. Plus the cameos of stormtroopers, Han Solo, Chewbacca, a rather disco-fied Princess Leia and an odd assortment of Cantina aliens make this commercial even cooler.

May the Force be with Hagoromo Foods!

Below are some of our favorite screen grabs from the commercial:

Star Wars Fan Movie Winner directs Trenches Team | January 27, 2010

The directors, actors, screenwriters and additional crew who take the time, effort and money to make their own Star Wars fan films always hold a special place in our hearts. So when we see past winners of the Star Wars Film Movie Challenge end up making their dreams come true in the entertainment industry, we get excited.

Past fan film winner Shane Felux who made Star Wars Revelations, then won with Pitching Lucas, is now showing his talents on a new original online series called Trenches.

Set on a war-torn alien planet, Trenches is about a young soldier and his squad forced to team up with their enemies to fight vicious beasts. It features more than 400 effects shots, a huge number for an Internet show.

(Star Wars prequels producer) Rick McCallum himself told me to go and do my own thing, to go out and make my own story, and Trenches was that step forward.

Mon Dieu! Star Wars Made in France Team | January 13, 2010

From a country that loves its mimes and Jerry Lewis, it shouldn’t be surprising that this vintage video from 1977 features a gaggle of dancing Darth Vaders and C-3POs.

If droids dream, this is probably it.

NASA WISE or R2-D2 in Disguise? Team | January 7, 2010

NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has returned its first photograph – a calibration shot of “about 3,000 stars in the Carina constellation.” While the star-filled image was impressive, we couldn’t help but think their explorer sure looks a lot like an encased astromech.

NASA has described the cryostat as resembling “a giant Thermos bottle” or “the Star Wars robot R2-D2″, and being “about the height and weight of a big polar bear, only wider”. The agency’s big polar bear in this case is 2.85 metres tall, 2 metres wide, 1.73 metres deep and weighs 661kg.

Star Wars as The A-Team

Here’s a brilliant fan-made mash-up of Star Wars characters as members of The A-Team. Not sure who’s Murdock in that line-up, but it’s awesome just the same.
