Let’s Go “Skywalking”

Bonnie Burton | November 3, 2009

Check out this awesome fan-made music video depicting a lovesick Luke Skywalker pining away for a certain sassy princess before he discovered they were actually siblings.

If Ackbar ran KTEL, this is the kind of record we’d be slow skating to on Hoth. Just sayin…

What Halloween Costumes Say About You

Bonnie Burton | October 20, 2009

Before you decide to don that homemade sexy Ewok costume, or dress up as a Bacon Jedi (best of both worlds really), take a moment to think what kind of message you’re sending to friends, family, co-workers and strangers who see you walking across the street.

A.V. Club offers some insight on what your costume says about you.

Piling on enough costume and make-up to make yourself unrecognizable to your own parents, you’re free to act with social impunity. But as you’re strutting around wearing little more than underwear and angel wings, or rocking the look of a celebrity before the ink on his or her death certificate is even dry, remember that dressing up and acting out might betray more about your personality than your day-to-day behavior does.

New parents out with baby
Having your first child can often be seen as an opportunity to start reliving your youth, plus it is likely the first time you have a companion small enough to effectively wear a Yoda costume.

What you think it says about you: “Halloween was a magical part of our childhoods and we couldn’t wait to share it with our son or daughter.”

What it actually says: “Even though we are both only 24 years old, we are both getting used to spending this otherwise fun holiday changing a tiny Chewbacca’s diapers.”

Rare Star Wars PSA Behind the Scenes Video

Pete Vilmur | October 19, 2009

psa

StarWars.com readers may remember our interview with Peter Shillingford, who directed the 1977 childhood immunization public service announcement ad that aired shortly after the release of A New Hope. As it seems a lot of archival home-made movies have been making their way online lately (see the 1976 ILM home movie here), we thought we’d share another recent discovery reportedly posted by the grandson or granddaughter of the Star Wars PSA’s producer. From poster “sowtime444”:

This was shot by my grandparents in England. There is no sound. My grandfather worked for the Kennedy Foundation and produced the Star Wars commercials. He was a talented writer, among other things. He is the one with the orange-red vest on.

The footage reveals over five minutes of the goings-on behind the scenes on the commercial shoot, which starred both Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and Kenny Baker as R2-D2. Director Peter Shillingford is the chap in the blue sweater.

Chewie is the Ultimate Sidekick

Bonnie Burton | October 15, 2009

Novelist and Star Wars fan John Scalzi often pontificates the finer points of the saga as only a fanboy can. Read his latest column about why he thinks Chewbacca is the best sci-fi sidekick ever!

1. He’s alien
Dude’s a seven foot pile of shag who walks around naked, save for a bandolier. He communicates by howling. He’ll rip the arms off a droid just to make a point about sportsmanship. Face it, you’re not going to run across anyone like that on a day-to-day basis.

2. He’s not too alien
At the same time, he’s not a gelatinous mass or a cold-blooded reptile — he’s furry and (almost) kind of cuddly, has sympathetic blue eyes and a Scooby Doo-like streak of neurosis in him, allowing Han to berate him from time to time in an amusing fashion.

World’s Smallest R2-D2?

StarWars.com Team | October 14, 2009

Crafty Star Wars fan Rob Meyer built this very small (1/18th scale) R2-D2 with three of Solarbotics GM15 pager gearmotors. It uses two of the motors in the drive train and one to rotate the mech’s dome. It measures a whopping 2.36″/6cm tall!

Supermarket Bans Jedi Knight

Tesco Supermarket has been accused of religious discrimination after banning a Jedi Knight for wearing a hood. Daniel Jones — leader of the UK’s first Jedi Church — was branded a security risk and ejected by three staff after refusing to remove his hoodie at a Tesco in Bangor, North Wales.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We would ask Jedi to remove hoods. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all went hoodless without going to the Dark Side.”
