Vote for the Next Star Wars Action Figure

StarWars.com Team | October 21, 2011

Take part in the official Hasbro Fans’ Choice poll to decide which Star Wars character will go into production next!

Star Wars Insider magazine and Hasbro have joined forces to give Star Wars fans the chance to vote for a Star Wars character to be made into an action figure! The figure will be included in Hasbro’s Star Wars action figure line in 2013, in time for the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi.

There are twenty Star Wars characters in the running. The winning character will be announced at Hasbro’s 2012 Collector-Fan Media Day event at Toy Fair in New York in February 2012.

“Everybody loves collecting Star Wars and this is a rare chance to vote for a character to be made into an action figure, says Jonathan Wilkins, Star Wars Insider editor. “There are some really diverse characters to choose from; from the movies to the Expanded Universe; from the dreaded Emperor Palpatine to the cute Princess Kneesa. We want as many fans as possible to get involved! Who will you choose? You can read more about the history of the fan poll in the latest issue of Star Wars Insider, out now! Get voting!”

The toy that makes it into production will be decided by this poll alone, so this really is your chance to stake a claim for the toy you’d like to own most.

To place your vote, visit the Star Wars Insider magazine website.

Yoda Helps an Autistic Flower Girl

StarWars.com Team | October 20, 2011

Yoda is the kind of Jedi Master who gives great advice, but he also serves as a symbol for bravery. To one young fan, Yoda became a friend she could lean on when a crowded wedding made her nervous.

Offbeat Bride Blog this week reports of an autistic flower girl who wore her Yoda backpack during a wedding to give her extra courage.

T, the flower girl, had spent the morning hiding under the bed. She has autism, and the prospect of an event with all those people was pretty daunting. T’s aunty finally coaxed her out from under the bed with the promise of a Yoda backpack. Her aunt took her to the toy shop, and from that moment on Yoda sat on her shoulder and she seemed to feel safe with him there.

When it came time to put on the dress and head to the church T flat refused to go without Yoda on her shoulder. Her mother, the bride, said to her family “If Yoda helps T get to the church and walk down that aisle with all those people watching, then Yoda is coming!”

Meet Bones the AT-AT Dog!

StarWars.com Team | October 19, 2011

photos: John Nolan

This adorkable AT-AT dog costume made the rounds last week online. As a craftster, I am always curious how fans make their elaborate cosplay costumes, especially for their pets.

StarWars.com chats with artist and photographer Katie Mello — who works as a Character Fabricator at LAIKA/house, an animation studio (Coraline) in Portland, Oregon — about how she made the AT-AT costume for her dog named Bones!

What is the back story of these photos? Why dress up your dog as an AT-AT?

I have been a Star Wars fan forever. When I was younger, I wanted to work for Industrial Light & Magic when I grew up. I studied everything I could about “special effects.”

By the time I got into college it was clear that everything would be done with computers and I was more interested in making tangible artwork. Lucky for me I discovered stop-motion animation. Now I build puppets for stop-motion productions, and have developed the skills that I need to make just about anything I want.

From the first time we saw Bones, an Italian Greyhound, my husband and I thought he looked like an AT-AT. He has such an unusual shape. Three years later, I finally made him this costume. I also used this opportunity to improve my patterning and sewing skills.

What did you make the costume out of?

First I made a costuming dummy out of upholstery foam, so I could minimize the amount of fittings that I would have to do on Bones. His comfort is important to me. To make the form, I carved the foam into Bones likeness and made sure it matched his measurements. This made the whole process much easier, and I can make other costumes for him very easily now.

The main body is a super-stretchy cotton/spandex, which I patterned for Bones using a shirt that he wears to keep warm. I also made a stretchy cowl to go over his head. I airbrushed this while it was on the costume dummy using airbrush paint.
