Hera from Star Wars Rebels

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delays between posts, but I’ve been pretty busy as you can imagine. Things are going really well on Star Wars Rebels, and I’m very proud of the work the team is doing. I also know that you guys are hard at work getting ready for Comic-Con, and other conventions for this summer, and many of you have asked for some insights as far as what materials are used in some of the costumes on Rebels. It is always a challenge taking an animated style and translating into an actual costume, so I thought I would do a quick breakdown of some of the characters, as we head into Con Season. I might not be able to get to them all, but I will start with one that has been requested quite a bit: Hera. I hope this breakdown helps. Any other need-to-know questions are welcomed and I will try to answer them as I have time. Thanks, and good luck with the costumes.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars logo

The Clone Wars “Lost Missions” made its debut on Netflix on Friday, and in honor of that fact I thought it was time for a new blog post, specifically for everyone who supported the show.

Growing up a Star Wars fan I dreamed of what the Clone Wars were like, but I never dared dream I would be lucky enough to be a part of the telling of these stories, with some of the most creative and talented people I have ever known.

Sculpting The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels with Darren Marshall

Hello Star Wars fans,

If you have followed the Clone Wars TV series over the years you will no doubt be familiar with the names of some of my team who are, for the most part, behind the scenes. When I was first making my transition from traditional hand drawn animation to the possibilities CG animation offered, I was very concerned with how the drawings Kilian Plunkett and I were doing would be realized in three dimensions. How did we solve this problem? Enter design artist and sculptor Darren Marshall. Darren has been a member of the Lucasfilm Animation team for eleven years. Predating the creation of The Clone Wars, Darren was part of a special team of artists who were pitching animated concepts to Lucasfilm. When I came in to direct The Clone Wars, Darren was about to leave, believing his time at Lucasfilm was over, since it is rare to have a sculptor on a television series. However, when I saw his work, I knew that Darren would be able to make the critical translation between line art and three-dimensional form work. Simply put, Darren defined the style of the characters on Clone Wars, and has done so as a critical part of the design team for the past eight years.

Loving The Hobbit, Building The Clone Wars

I will never forget the bookshelf my parents kept in our living room when I was growing up. My parents are avid readers, so they collected books on world cultures, art, architecture, opera, natural history, and world history. From this vast selection of topics, there was a series of three books packaged together in a special box that always drew my attention. When I pulled one out I found a strange red eye looking at me, surrounded by a field of black with bizarre red writing around the edge of the circle. At the top was what appeared to be four flames licking upward towards an inverted ring. The binding read, The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Star Wars Will Be Forever

I used to work for Disney. I’m not sure how many of you knew that. I was in the Television Animation Division, and I worked on projects like Teamo Supremo, Kim Possible, Lilo and Stitch: The Series, Dave the Barbarian, and Fillmore. It was an amazing time for me as an animation artist. Walking around the studio lot and seeing the influence that Walt Disney himself had on every aspect of his studio. When I started at Lucasfilm I saw that same attention to detail everywhere around me, and it all came directly from George.

Season Five.

I can hardly believe it. When I first arrived at Lucasfilm and George and I had our first meetings to discuss the The Clone Wars, he spoke of doing at least a hundred episodes. Well, in Season Five we will pass the 100 episode mark, and keep right on going. At the time, back in 2005, it was hard to imagine 100 episodes; we had a very small staff back then, and barely an idea of what the show might look like, or how we would achieve some of the ambitious visuals we were exploring.
