Star Wars Mocktails

Kristen Hidalgo | April 30, 2013

Years before I started working in events at Lucasfilm, I worked in the kitchen at Skywalker Ranch. I’ve since traded a chef’s knife for a laptop, but every once in a while I get to play in the kitchen again.

To help celebrate May the 4th I was asked to create some recipes for Star Wars-themed mocktails. Each drink had to combine fun Star Wars elements into something delicious to drink. Challenge accepted!

For members of the 501st and Rebel Legions, membership means celebrating Star Wars and contributing to local community and charitable causes. Virtually every week somewhere in the world, an event featuring members dressed as characters from the Galactic Empire or the Old Republic or the Rebel Alliance may be found helping out their neighbors and bringing smiles to everyone they encounter.

The Star Wars Comic Book: Lucas’ Original Story Told

J.W. Rinzler | April 29, 2013

Mike Mayhew's sketch of Montross.

By now most fans are aware that George Lucas has given us permission to adapt his rough draft for The Star Wars, which he wrote in 1974. As of today artist Mike Mayhew has finished pages for the first issue and is starting on issue #2, roughing in the action; colorist Rain Beredo is about half way done on issue #1. I’m in the middle of adapting issue #5 in the eight-issue arc. It’s safe to say we’re all enjoying it. Hats off to Randy Stradley at Dark Horse for finding Mike, and to Mike for recommending Rain. What a team!

I think fans are going to enjoy all this — from the most serious fan to the most casual fan, and perhaps the youngest fan — because George told such a cool, accessible story, and because Mike and Rain are doing such fantastic work. I’m pulling my weight, too (or hope I am). It’s fascinating to get into the nuts and bolts of George’s script, to examine closely and interpret, when necessary, fill in a few tiny gaps, and transfer the most visual and exciting aspects to sequential storytelling, panel by panel.

May the 4th Be With You: A Star Wars Pun Primer

Eric Geller | April 29, 2013

Star Wars Day is one of my favorite days of the year, but not just for the obvious reasons. Sure, it’s a day when the global fan community can come together and celebrate the greatest entertainment franchise in human history. And sure, many companies offer discounts and other special offers on their Star Wars products to reward the diehard fans who are scouring the Internet for them. But the Star Wars theme is only half of what makes May the 4th so great. The other half: puns, my favorite genre of comedic humor.

The letter to Chief Justice Roberts on YouTube

You never know how you’re going to meet and make new friends through Star Wars. It could be standing in line for a week waiting for the next movie. Perhaps it’s at a big Star Wars Celebration convention. Or maybe it’s someone you’re marching next to at a 501st Legion parade. In this case, it was a viral video of a really smart and articulate 12-year-old boy reading a letter he wrote to Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts after he heard that Justice Roberts and his wife had two adopted children.
