If you would like to craft a keepsake that celebrates both love and Star Wars this Valentine’s Day, then get to work on these kissing clothespin dolls. I made two versions of the dolls with my favorite galactic couples: Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker and, of course, Princess Leia and Han Solo.

What you need:

  • Clothespins
  • Pencil
  • Acrylic paint
  • Fine paint brush
  • Hot glue gun
  • Small button
  • Leather cord
  • Small brass hardware washer
  • Fine black pen

First, draw lines on the clothespins to outline paint borders.

Staying in the lines, paint each half of the clothespin according to character.

For my Padmé and Anakin doll, I referenced a scene from Episode II in which the young lovers canoodle in a field on Naboo, reveling in their secret romance. Padmé is in a printed gold dress, and Anakin is sporting a simple brown Jedi robe.

For my Leia and Han doll, I have dressed both characters in uniform. The princess dons plain white garb, while Sir Solo wears dark gray.

Now let’s work on the details. To make Padmé Amidala’s hair, (one of the films’ great characters itself), tie a knot in the leather cord and give it a twist.

Hot glue the knot to the top of the Padmé pin, swoop the twist around, and glue the leather ends to the pin’s side. Glue the decorative brass washer to the front side of the leather twist.

Take a small button, paint it brown, and paint a little brown on the top of Leia’s clothespin to match. Once dry, hot glue the button to edge of Leia’s “head,” creating the illusion of her iconic hair bun.

…and what do you know — these clothespins are starting to look like some Star Wars smoochers!

For the final step in personifying the dolls, draw crescent eyes on the face of the clothespins with fine black pen.

And that’s it! These adorkable knickknacks make the perfect gift for your boo this holiday. Happy Valentine’s Day!
