SWCVI: Star Wars Sound Panel

David Acord | September 7, 2012

Ben Burtt, Matthew Wood and I hosted a panel at Celebration CVI over the weekend on Star Wars sound. A part of our presentation involved the breakdown of a scene from The Clone Wars (“Massacre”, season 4). I stripped out the sound effects and dialog from the scene leaving it rather bare bones. We invited volunteers from the audience to come up to the stage and perform the sound effects and dialog for us in order to rebuild the scene. One person performed lasers sounds (pew! pew!), another young man performed lightsaber swishes (WOOOW!), and two others performed explosions (kaBOOM!). The lasers were layered in as background battle and the swishes and explosions served as Ventress’ attack on the Super Battledroids. Three more volunteers perfumed the dialog in the scene (two Battle Droids and General Grievous).

R2-D2 Likes Cupcakes too!

Sooooo, I have been keeping this a secret for a long time but I am so excited to finally announce that I had the AMAZING opportunity to be a guest judge on this Sunday’s brand new Star Wars episode of The Cupcake Wars! I am a self proclaimed cupcake connoisseur and when I got the call to be on the show, I think the whole neighborhood could hear my excited screams! I joked that I’ve researched my whole life for this one pivotal moment…LOL! I joke, but kidding aside, I was ready. I took it very seriously and I had to try 15 cupcakes in one day! Don’t worry, I paced myself, and it was literally a dream come true. I got to sit on the judging panel with Sprinkles Cupcakes founder Candace Nelson, chef and co-owner of Mad-Mac Florian Bellanger and work with host Justin Willman. They were all so nice and I was completely geeking out on the inside the entire time because I was such a big fan!

As the curtain slowly fell on the splendor of Star Wars Celebration VI, with many members of the 501st already beginning preliminary plans for Celebration Europe II, a small, but hardy — some might say die-hard — detachment of troops made their way up to Atlanta, Georgia after a few days recovery for the majesty and wonder that was Dragon*Con 2012.

Rites of Autumn: A Stormtrooper’s guide on how to make football even more awesome

It’s that time of year again: the air turns cool and crisp and it’s fun to grab some snacks and watch some favorite movies. Or football. Or both! Last night I was stuffing envelopes with 501st Legion patches while watching my Gamecocks play (horribly) and it struck me how long I’ve been a fan of both football and Star Wars. So I thought I’d take this chance at the beginning of football season to talk about how the two have intersected in my life over the years.

DCON2012-parade-21a

Every Labor Day, fandoms from all corners of the entertainment universe converge in Atlanta for Dragon*Con, which touts itself as “the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe!” One of the highlights of the weekend is the official Dragon*Con parade that happens on Saturday morning. This costumed display has become such a big attraction that even Atlanta residents that don’t attend the con get to the route an hour ahead of the parade’s start time to make sure they have an optimal viewing experience.

A gift for me - how nice

At least I assume that Gremlin-esque transformation of a part of my collection happened sometime during the insanely wonderful Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando. How else to explain the simple math: We arrived at the Orange County Convention Center with 17 pallets and crates weighing well over two tons. The returning truck has 26 pallets and crates weighing who-knows-how-much!

Making Visual Sense of the Making of Jedi But Making No Sense At All…

Well, I’m off to NYC next week to work with Abrams on a yet-to-be-announced book. Some fans, or at least one I’ve noticed online, have already guess at its subject, but I’m forbidden to announce it. Still too early, but it’ll be out spring of next year. Also spending a fair amount of time on another undisclosed project, very exciting, but way, way too early to announce—it’s presently scheduled for early 2014. Sorry to tease, but it’s like working in a different time zone, toiling away on material that has no verbal or public forum. I guess there are a lot of people in the same boat.

Dragon*Con Star Wars Costume Contest: Where do we go from here?

Holly Frey | September 4, 2012

DCON2012-SWCC-9

If there’s one thing that’s central to the Dragon*Con experience, it’s costumes. You can’t wave a stick in any of the host hotels without whacking a costumed attendee. (Please, don’t wave sticks at cons with the intent of whacking people.) And because the con is so huge, most tracks have their own costume contests, in addition to the con-wide hall costume contest and the Dragon*Con Masquerade. Star Wars is no exception, but this year was unique because Dragon*Con fell right on the heels of Celebration VI. That meant that some people had opted to attend the less frequent Star Wars con instead of the annual con, and some people attended both, but were too wiped out from CVI to compete their costumes again. This resulted in a slightly smaller field for the Dragon*Con contest. Even with a smaller group, there was no shortage of variety and creativity.

It’s that time of year again.  The summer holidays are over and it’s time for the kids to head back to school.  This can be a sad time for kids because their vacation is over, but it should also be an exciting time because they will be learning all new things this year!  A great way to get kids excited for school and learning is to get some fun reading material into their hands.  They are going to be doing book reports, why not use Star Wars themed books?  Here are some fun Star Wars books for readers of all ages.
