San Francisco Builds Giant LEGO Yoda Santa

StarWars.com Team | November 21, 2011

This weekend, Star Wars fans in San Francisco gathered in Union Square to help LEGO Master Builders construct a 12-foot tall LEGO Yoda Santa from about 250,000 bricks!

Wired reports:

Contributing some brick building to an undertaking like this is a strangely satisfying thing. Participants create large ‘bricks’ which are used to scale up from a model. Because the whole thing builds so quickly, you really feel like you’re part of making a LEGO creation. The crowds of adults and kids getting involved today were all having a wonderful time building, chatting and sharing hints.

Glee cast w/ Chewbacca

Chewbacca visits the set of the hit Fox show Glee to add some intergalactic Wookiee love… right after Life Day, no less.

Glee actors Kevin McHale, Harry Shum Jr., Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, Damian McGinty, Dianna Agron and Jenna Ushkowitz tweeted about their Wookiee hugs on the set!

We already knew Glee star Chris Colfer was a die-hard fan when he tweeted about his Chewbacca backpack this year, but it even cooler to know that ALL the Gleeks love Wookiees!

Fingers crossed that Jane Lynch shows up in a Darth Vader costume!

Carbon Fiber Stormtroopers!

Bonnie Burton | November 16, 2011

When talented Star Wars fans work at a company that sells carbon fiber, it’s only a matter of time before they construct something awesome in honor of the 501st Legion. Check out this rather innovative Stormtrooper armor made from carbon fiber!

Leonard Carson, an engineering technician for San Diego Composites, had been toying around with this idea of a carbon fiber Stormtrooper for a long time. He finally convinced three of his engineering co-workers to jump on board with turning this carbon fiber idea, into a carbon fiber reality. Being the huge Star War fans that they are, and often working with the material for their composites company, I’d have to guess not too much convincing was necessary.

And so the thought process began. There was a lot to consider for this project, especially cost. We all know how pricey our precious carbon fiber material can be. Other than that, the four troopers needed to think about the most logical tooling, finishing and best processes to use. They used all grade A materials from a local supplier, and their employer, San Diego Composites, donated some resources to the project as well.
