ShoWest: Get Smart

Bonnie Burton | March 14, 2008

Our Starwars.com ShoWest coverage of the Warner Bros. “Big Picture” presentation continues with a funny introduction of the upcoming Get Smart comedy, directed by Peter Segal. In the film Steve Carell plays Maxwell Smart, AKA Agent 86 for CONTROL, who battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 played by Anne Hathaway at his side. The stellar cast also includes Masi Oka, Dwayne “Don’t Call Him The Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin, Bill Murray and Terence Stamp.

Director Peter Segal and actors Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway introduced a short clip of the film in which Maxwell Smart manages to be mistaken for a terrorist on a plane while on a mission, only to misuse a rather cool gadget in order to escape. Not to give too much away, but the segment serves as a rather hilarious PSA on why you shouldn’t try new James Bond-esque weapons in a tiny airplane bathroom.

After the clip, Segal and the actors chatted a bit about their time filming Get Smart.

Peter Segal:
“Mel Brooks and Buck Henry created ‘Get Smart’ and our adaptation stands in the shadow of this great show, trying not to completely suck.” [laughs]

Steve Carell:
“This movie, and I hope I’m not overselling it, is not just a popcorn movie, it’s a popcorn, goobers, soft-pretzel movie! This is the most fun I had doing anything!”

Anne Hathaway:
“One night Terence Stamp decided his hotel had bad energy and wanted to move to another location. It was in the middle of the night and he was having trouble getting a cab. Someone in a car slowly drove by and saw him and yelled, “Zod?” and Terence replied “Yes?” And the guy asked, “What are you doing here?” And Terence said, “Trying to get a cab.” And the guy asked if he could give him a ride, and Terence took him up on his offer and they drove off. And that’s the kind of people I worked with on this film!” [laughs]
